Back home, everything seemed peaceful and tranquil.
But for the eldest branch of the Stone family, who had been struck from the family registry by Old Mr. Stone and exiled abroad, life had been nothing short of misery from the very first moment.
Beverly, Arnold's wife, had no choice but to follow them, no matter how unwilling she was. At first, she had clung to the hope that the old man was merely furious and that they would eventually be allowed to return. So, for the time being, she endured.
After all, given her current circumstances, the chances of divorcing and remarrying were slim. Worse still, the Lawrence family was now under the control of that scoundrel Ronaldo, cutting off any possibility of returning to her own family. She had no choice but to stay with Arnold—for now.
But who could have imagined?
Who could have guessed the old man was dead serious?
So much time had passed, yet Old Mr. Stone hadn’t so much as hinted at letting them return. It wasn’t until Beverly overheard a conversation between Arnold and his father that the truth finally hit her. The eldest branch was finished—completely and utterly.
And Beverly? She might very well be doomed to live the rest of her life as a commoner.
She couldn’t accept that.
Sure, she had gritted her teeth through the poor food and shabby living conditions, telling herself it was temporary. But the thought of this being her reality forever? Unthinkable.
So she laid her cards on the table—with Arnold, and with her so-called in-laws.
She wanted a divorce.
She was going back home.
Even if returning to her parents' home meant being overshadowed by Ronaldo, it was still better than enduring this disgusting life any longer... She truly couldn't take it anymore. Especially since Arnold wasn't working, their savings were dwindling rapidly. If things continued this way, they probably wouldn't even be able to afford this modest rented house.
So she had to get a divorce—
It wasn’t just Beverly who couldn’t stand this life anymore. Arnold and his parents were equally fed up. They had always lived in luxury—how could they tolerate such hardship?
But before they could even come up with a solution, their daughter-in-law was already demanding a divorce from their son!
When Khloe heard those words, she was momentarily stunned, as if she couldn’t believe Beverly would dare to initiate the divorce herself.
She had even been merciful enough to let her off the hook after that affair, not forcing Arnold to divorce her. And now that their family had fallen on hard times, she wanted to leave?
Furious, Khloe snapped, "Absolutely not!"
Arnold’s father frowned but remained silent. Meanwhile, Arnold himself glared at Beverly with icy, dagger-like eyes.
Beverly shrank slightly under their combined gazes.
She instinctively took a step back.
But her expression remained resolute.
Yet no one moved to help her—not even her husband. They all just stared at her coldly, their mocking gazes implying she was putting on some pathetic act.
A chill settled in Beverly’s heart. Slowly, she pushed herself up, her face devoid of emotion as she faced the three of them. "No matter what you think of me, I’ve at least given the Stone family a son. Arnold, is this how you repay me? Or have you forgotten what a desperate fool you were when you begged to marry me? You knew back then that I loved Lambert—so why did you insist? Hypocrites, the lot of you. None of you has the right to judge."
Arnold’s expression darkened instantly.
But Beverly didn’t flinch. Clenching her jaw, she continued, her voice dripping with venom, "And let me make one thing clear—this divorce is happening. I’ve already told my parents, and they support me. In a few days, they’ll send someone to take me home. Think carefully—you’re nobodies now. Crushing you would be child’s play for the Lawrence family. These two slaps? I won’t forget them."
Silence followed her words.
Arnold and Khloe stood frozen, as if they hadn’t expected Beverly to actually go this far—or that she had already involved the Lawrence family.
This caught them completely off guard.
When Old Mr. Stone first struck them from the family registry and exiled them abroad, they pleaded with the Lawrence family for help, only to be met with cold indifference. So they assumed the Lawrence family had abandoned Beverly as well, especially now that Ronaldo held the reins of power.
Thus, when Beverly made her declaration, Arnold let out a derisive laugh. "Trying to fool me? The Lawrence family is coming for you? Ha! If your brother Ronaldo hadn’t returned, I might’ve bought it. But now?" His voice dripped with scorn. "Beverly, what kind of delusion are you living in? Do you really think Ronaldo would lift a finger for a half-sister who’s treated him like dirt since childhood?"
Beverly’s fingers curled into tight fists.
She forced down the storm of emotions inside her, then countered with icy sarcasm. "So what? Whether I’m lying or not, you’ll find out soon enough. True, Ronaldo and I didn’t get along when we were young, but I’m still a daughter of the Lawrence family. If he doesn’t want tongues wagging about his lack of familial duty, he’ll step in. And let’s not forget—my father is still alive." Her lips twisted into a smirk. "As for you? Just rot away in this pathetic slum."
A slow, twisted smile of triumph spread across her face.
