Ariana's lips twitched as she listened to Kiara's incessant chatter, feeling utterly helpless.
The girl had been pestering her for days now.
It was always the same topic—pleading with puppy-dog eyes, asking if Ariana could go back to the White family for a visit. To be honest, Ariana felt a faint warmth in her heart. She was touched by Kiara's unwavering concern. She knew exactly what the girl was trying to do—mend the rift between her and her parents.
Kiara had always believed that the reason Ariana had cut ties with her family and refused to return was because of her.
But that wasn’t the case.
Ariana sighed inwardly.
Looking at Kiara’s hopeful, wide-eyed gaze, Ariana couldn’t help but smile faintly before replying, "We’ll see. Maybe when things settle down a bit."
Kiara immediately seized the opportunity. "But now’s the perfect time! You’re on holiday, Sister Ariana! Most people are off work—it’s the most relaxed period. And you don’t even have to go during the day! Just drop by for dinner. Uncle and Auntie really miss sharing a meal with you. Please?"
Ariana: "..."
Kiara blinked rapidly, her eyes brimming with anticipation.
Finally, Ariana relented under the relentless pressure. With a resigned nod, she muttered, "Alright, fine."
Kiara’s face lit up instantly. "So that’s a yes, right? Haha, I’ll tell Uncle and Auntie right away! How about tonight?" Then, realizing she might be rushing things, she quickly added, "Or tomorrow! Or the day after! Whatever works for you!"
Ariana couldn’t suppress a chuckle, her eyes softening with amused exasperation. "Tonight, then." She wasn’t even sure if she truly wanted to go back—her emotions were a tangled mess.
But when she thought about what Kiara had just said—that her parents cooked extra food every day, hoping she’d come home—a faint ache tugged at her heart.
Maybe...
Perhaps I've been too petty.
Ariana was a mother now, no longer the stubborn girl she once was. She wasn't the kind of person to be needlessly cruel—unless someone deliberately provoked her, she wouldn’t lash out at anyone. And when it came to her parents, she had always been more forgiving, especially after having three children of her own.
Maybe it was time to go back and see them. The thought of her father’s cautious tone during their last phone call weighed on her heart.
So when Kiara had been pestering her these past few days to visit, it had given her the perfect excuse to relent.
The moment Kiara confirmed that Ariana would be coming home that evening, she immediately called her uncle, practically bubbling with excitement. "Uncle, Sister Ariana, and I are coming over tonight! And she’s bringing the kids too!"
Gilbert was at the office when he received the call. For a moment, he was stunned. Then, elation surged through him. "Good, good," he managed, his voice thick with emotion.
As soon as he hung up, he dialed his wife, Georgia. "Ariana’s coming home tonight. Make sure the cook prepares all her favorite dishes."
Georgia had even intended to mediate between them, gently easing the tension. But she hadn’t anticipated Ariana’s sudden decision to visit today. 'Wasn’t she supposed to stay away?' Her eyes flickered with unease, and she bit her lip lightly, a trace of frustration crossing her face.
Just then, Jane spoke again.
Hearing her words only deepened Georgia’s irritation. She pressed her lips together, unsure how to respond. Logically, she knew Jane was right—but she couldn’t let this rare opportunity slip away. After all, she had gone to great lengths to arrange this moment, hoping to reconcile uncle and niece.
After a long pause, Georgia finally said in a measured tone, "No need. Ariana is your sister—she isn’t that petty. Besides, she’s bringing Lucian and the children this time. You haven’t met your nephews yet, have you? They’re adorable. It’ll be good for the kids to get to know their aunt."
Jane still hesitated. "But... I’m afraid Sister Ariana might be unhappy."
Georgia shook her head. "Why would she be? She’s my daughter—she takes after me in temperament. You’re her sister. What kind of grudge could last between siblings?"
Jane seemed to relax slightly at her words. "Alright then," she murmured. "As long as I’m not causing trouble for you, Auntie, I don’t mind. I just don’t want Sister Ariana to misunderstand because of me. That would make me feel even guiltier."
Georgia’s eyes warmed with affection. She reached out to pat Jane’s head gently. "Don’t worry. Both you and Ariana are like daughters to me. She’ll understand."
Jane met her gaze and nodded slowly, a faint smile touching her lips.
But the smile never reached her eyes.
A closer look would have revealed something cold beneath the surface.
