Eager to reunite with his long-absent daughter, Gilbert had planned to leave work early.
But an urgent matter—something critically important—cropped up at the company, forcing him to suppress his impatience and stay behind to handle it.
When Kiara broke the news to Ariana, she did so with cautious hesitation, as if afraid her sister might take offense and change her mind about returning home.
Ariana couldn’t help but sigh at her sister’s expression.
'Is this really how my parents and Kiara see me?'
She cleared her throat lightly, brushing the thought aside. "It’s fine," she said, turning to Kiara. "Let’s go ahead first. Your brother-in-law will head straight to the White Family residence after work. We’ll meet him there."
Kiara’s eyes sparkled with relief, and she nodded eagerly. "Okay!"
And so, Ariana set off with Kiara, Kevin, and Carson in tow, leaving Lucian behind to be brought over later by Lambert after his classes.
Little did Ariana know, however, that her mother had prepared a rather unexpected "gift" for her return.
News of Ariana’s rare homecoming had spread through the White Family household, and the butler was already waiting at the door, ready to receive them.
The doorbell rang, and the butler immediately went to answer it.
Ariana looked at the familiar face and smiled. "Uncle."
The butler's eyes lit up. "Young Mistress! You're back—" He suddenly remembered his duties and quickly ushered her inside.
Ariana felt a pang of awkwardness.
It was as if she were a guest.
But then again, it had been a long time since she last stepped foot in this house. Part of it was because of her mother, but she couldn’t deny that her own hot temper had played a role. At the thought, she pressed her lips together. Maybe it was time to let go of the past—of everything that had happened in her previous life.
After all, Jane had already lost.
She could no longer pose any threat to Ariana or the White family.
There was no point in dwelling on the tragic death she had suffered before. As for her mother… though the disappointment still stung, if she put herself in her mother’s shoes, perhaps it hadn’t been entirely unreasonable.
Maybe she had been too sensitive.
Lost in thought, Ariana glanced around the villa. Everything was exactly as she remembered—unchanged.
A flicker of nostalgia passed through her eyes.
Just then, Georgia emerged from the kitchen, drawn by the commotion.
The moment she saw Ariana, a trace of discomfort flashed across her face before she quickly smoothed it over with her usual gentle smile. "Ariana, you’re finally home," she said warmly. Then her gaze dropped to the adorable, snow-white child in Ariana’s arms—and the other one held by Kiara.
Georgia had always had a soft spot for her grandchildren.
Her eyes lit up as she approached, saying with evident fondness, "My, how they've grown! Such adorable little ones."
Ariana gave a slight nod. "Mm..."
For the first time, Kiara was at a complete loss for words.
Normally, in situations like this, she’d be quick to smooth things over with a few well-placed remarks. But now, she couldn’t muster a single syllable.
Ariana’s expression was icy, the kind of cold that could make people instinctively take three steps back.
Erwin and Carson seemed to sense their mother’s sudden shift in mood. They glanced around in confusion, their lips trembling slightly as if on the verge of tears, unsettled by the tension.
Meanwhile, Jane slowly approached.
With a bright smile, she said, "So these are my little nephews? They’re adorable. Can I hold them, Sister Ariana?"
Georgia watched Jane with approval, clearly pleased by her demeanor.
Then she turned to Ariana, expecting an equally gracious response. But she was in for disappointment. Ariana fixed Jane with a cold stare for a long moment before replying in a measured tone, "When did you get out?"
Jane froze, then cast an uneasy glance at Georgia, as if startled.
After a pause, she answered softly, "Just... a few days ago."
Ariana’s lips curled slightly. "Is that so?"
Georgia’s heart sank at Ariana’s attitude. In her mind, Ariana was destined to become the matriarch of the Stone family. Over the past two years, she must have matured—perhaps even realized the importance of family ties for a woman, which was why she had returned to reconcile. But to her dismay, Ariana’s temper remained as fiery as ever.
It was... disappointing.
