Georgia froze for a second, instinctively wanting to refuse.
She still needed to check out the investment she'd made in Jane to see if it was reliable. Jane had claimed she was starting a company, so Georgia had handed over more than half of her private savings—roughly forty million.
Of course, all of this had been done behind her husband’s back.
She knew her husband had no fondness for Jane, so she didn’t dare let him find out.
But she couldn’t just sit back and watch her resources dwindle.
With Ariana on the verge of becoming a vegetable and her three grandchildren distant, she had no choice but to plan ahead—investing in what she believed was the right heir. Who would’ve thought that after lying unconscious for half a month, Ariana would suddenly wake up?
Gilbert noticed his wife’s dazed expression and asked, "What’s wrong?"
Georgia snapped out of it, forcing a weak smile. "N-Nothing. Just... relieved that Ariana finally woke up."
Gilbert nodded in understanding.
He knew exactly how she felt—he’d been overwhelmed with emotion himself when he heard the news.
He studied her for a moment before adding, "While you’re at the hospital tomorrow, try to bond with the grandkids a little. Especially Kevin."
The sudden remark caught Georgia off guard.
Frowning, she asked, "Kevin? What about Kevin?"
Spending time with her grandchildren was one thing, but her husband’s words carried an odd weight—as if there was more to it.
Upon hearing this, Gilbert's lips curled into a faint smile. "There's something I haven't told you," he said. "Lambert has agreed to let Kevin inherit the White Group in the future. His children will also carry the White surname."
This had actually happened several days ago.
At the time, Gilbert had forgotten to mention it to Georgia.
"What?"
In that instant, Georgia was completely stunned! She stared at Gilbert in disbelief, her eyes brimming with anxiety and an involuntary surge of anger.
The family empire was being handed over to a grandson-in-law...
The news hit Georgia like a tidal wave, leaving her utterly disoriented.
If the group was going to the grandson-in-law anyway, then why had she bothered investing to help Jane establish her own company? Had all her efforts been for nothing? The thought made Georgia's face darken with displeasure.
...
Early morning.
Warm sunlight streamed through the window.
Ariana blinked sleepily, then slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was her eldest son, who had already woken up at some point and was now sitting on a small stool, quietly reading a book.
A helpless yet affectionate smile instantly softened Ariana's eyes.
She beckoned to her son.
Her mother.
Seeing her mother's name flash on the screen, Ariana's eyes flickered with emotion. After a brief hesitation, she finally answered the call. Silence stretched between them until Georgia tentatively called her name. Only then did Ariana respond in a measured tone, "What is it?"
Georgia pressed her lips together before speaking softly, "Ariana, how have you been? Lambert told us you're fine now, but I had to hear it from you myself to be sure."
Even though Ariana knew this concern wasn't entirely genuine, she couldn't help the slight softening of her expression. "I'm mostly recovered now," she replied, her voice still cool but noticeably less icy than before.
This subtle shift made Georgia exhale quietly in relief. A gentle laugh escaped her as she said, "That's good to hear. Now your father and I can rest easy. I kept vigil by your bedside the whole time you were unconscious. Heaven forbid if you'd become vegetative—what would become of my three precious grandchildren?" She ended with a wistful sigh.
There was no pretense in these words. Georgia did genuinely dote on her grandchildren—they were her flesh and blood after all. While not completely heartless, she was fundamentally self-interested, prioritizing her own needs above others'. Yet those three adorable grandchildren remained an exception to her usual indifference.
Detecting the undercurrent of maternal concern, Ariana felt her defenses involuntarily weakening. Even though... even though she suspected ulterior motives behind this call.
But having just awakened from what felt like a lifetime of nightmares, her thoughts still swam in haze. The memory of how her parents had perished because of Jane in that other life made her longstanding resentment toward her mother feel suddenly less sharp. After all, blood ultimately ran thicker than water.
Georgia seemed to sense her daughter's softening attitude, which filled her with joy and unwittingly brought back memories of little Ariana from years past.
For a fleeting moment, the meager maternal love she had reserved for Ariana stirred slightly within her. If her earlier phone call had been motivated by some ulterior reason, now her tone carried a touch of genuine warmth.
After nearly half an hour of conversation, Georgia finally said, "I'll come see you later, sweetheart. I’ll bring your little sister, Kiara, along. You’ve missed her, haven’t you? And that little one keeps asking about you and Lucian, too. Might as well bring her with me."
Ariana responded softly, "Mm."
Then, the call ended. Lucian looked up at his mother curiously, blinking his big eyes before asking, "Mom, who was that?"
A faint smile touched Ariana’s lips as she gazed at her son. Gently ruffling his hair, she replied, "Your grandma."
