Today, she saw it—that girl bore an uncanny resemblance to her younger self.
Kind-hearted, yet enduring everything with quiet resignation. Just moments ago, when Ariana had treated her with such icy indifference, the girl had stood there, lost and helpless. Georgia’s heart nearly shattered at the sight. She even felt a pang of resentment toward Ariana. After all, Ariana had grown up under her care, surrounded by the comforts of the White family’s privileged life.
But what about her eldest daughter?
Who knew what kind of hardships she had endured since childhood?
And yet, Ariana had been so relentless. Georgia knew all too well how cold her daughter could be.
If even she couldn’t bear it, how could anyone else?
The thought made her eyes sting with unshed tears.
Heaven had taken pity on her, allowing her to reunite with her child. This time, no matter what, she wouldn’t let this girl suffer alone again. She was her mother—she had to protect her!
…
Meanwhile, at the Stone Family residence.
Kevin was sprawled on the carpet, engrossed in play, while Carson kept sneaking up on his older brother. If his ambush succeeded, he’d burst into giggles; if it failed, he’d pout in frustration and scheme new ways to pester him. And if all else failed, he’d dissolve into loud, dramatic tears.
The old lady knew this youngest grandson all too well.
Maybe it had something to do with birth order, but even without looking, she could tell this little troublemaker was Lambert’s son.
He was exactly like his father had been at that age—
A tiny tyrant in the making.
Though these thoughts ran through her mind, the old lady's face remained warm with a smile. It was clear she adored Ariana's three children—how could she not? Each was so utterly adorable that even the usually stern and reserved grandfather couldn't help but soften in their presence.
Aster shot an envious glance at the twins from the third branch of the family. After a brief look, she turned away and addressed the old lady with a bright smile. "Mom, did you know? Alvin came in first in his class this time."
At the moment, Aster harbored nothing but disdain for the third branch. So much so that she was even willing to praise Alvin from the eldest branch if it meant diverting attention elsewhere.
The old lady raised an eyebrow slightly. "Oh? Is that so?"
Khloe hadn’t expected her sister-in-law to steer the conversation toward her. But since it was praise for her grandson, her smile deepened. She nodded gently. "Yes, Alvin. I thought his premature birth might have left him weaker, perhaps even a little behind in his studies. But the boy is resilient—and sharp, just like Arnold was at his age. To top it off, he aced his first exam. Honestly, it took me by surprise."
Truth be told, if Aster hadn’t brought it up, Khloe wouldn’t have mentioned Alvin at all.
In the beginning, of course, she had doted on him—after all, he was her only grandson.
But as time passed, and now with Madelyn pregnant, her focus had gradually shifted to the unborn child. Alvin’s mother was, in her eyes, tainted in every way, and Khloe couldn’t overlook that. Before, she had tolerated it because Alvin was her sole grandson—even if his mother was a constant thorn in her side. But now, with another grandchild on the way, one whose mother came from a respectable family and whom she actually liked, her priorities had naturally realigned.
And, most importantly, Alvin had never won the affection or attention of Old Mr. Stone or the old lady. So why should she bother?
Khloe shot her a sidelong glance, her lips curling into a faint, mocking smile. “All the Stone Family's children are bright. I’m sure little Collin will be no exception. And that little grandson of yours from the second branch—with Finley and Gwen’s combined genes, he’s bound to be both adorable and brilliant.”
In an instant, Aster’s face froze.
Seeing her expression darken, Khloe couldn’t have been more delighted.
Thinking she could outsmart me? She's still wet behind the ears.
Khloe smirked inwardly. She knew full well that Aster hated any mention of Gwen and Finley's IVF child. But precisely because it was a sore spot, Khloe was determined to bring it up—just to show Aster that she wasn’t some pushover to be manipulated.
Aster’s face twisted in discomfort, but with the family matriarch present, she couldn’t voice her displeasure outright. Instead, she shot Khloe a veiled glare.
Unfazed, Khloe met her gaze head-on, her expression unreadable.
As for the old lady, she blinked in mild surprise. "Gwen’s child has been born?"
Khloe’s lips twitched with barely concealed disdain. *Born?* Hardly the right word for a child conceived in a lab rather than the natural way. Could that even be considered a real child?
Still, she knew better than to openly contradict the family matriarch. Forcing a polite smile, she replied, "Not yet, but it won’t be long—just a matter of days now." Counting the timeline, the due date was imminent. The mere thought of Gwen returning to the Stone Family household with that child—and the priceless expressions on the faces of the second branch of the family—almost made her chuckle.
Unlike Khloe, the old lady harbored no such reservations. Though she, too, believed naturally conceived children were healthier, she wasn’t so rigid in her thinking. After all, a grandchild was still a grandchild.
With a faint smile, she nodded. "That’s good to hear." The Stone family would soon be livelier than ever. In the past, there had been so few children—just Lambert and his two cousins. But now, the family tree was flourishing.
