In the dim, frigid confines of a dilapidated basement.
No one could remain composed in such an environment—it was downright eerie, so much so that the air seemed thick with the musty stench of decay, evoking an instinctive sense of dread and unease.
Yet here Lexi was, locked away in this very place.
Her eyes darted nervously around the room as she trembled uncontrollably. Her face was deathly pale, her clothes filthy and disheveled. Still, it was clear that aside from her mental state, she was physically unharmed.
After all, Stefan was different from those vile, despicable people. Though he wanted her dead—
so fiercely that it felt as though he could skin her alive—he would never stoop to such depraved acts. He disdained that kind of behavior.
But that didn’t mean he would let her off easily.
And Lexi knew exactly how much Stefan hated her. That was why she was so terrified.
Cowering in the corner, her sleeves damp with tears, she shuddered with fear. Honestly, she regretted it now… truly regretted it. She… she had only wanted to get back at Allison, to make Stefan suffer a little. But she never imagined things would escalate this badly.
Lexi had grown up sheltered in an ivory tower. Even if her half-siblings had never been close to her, they had never subjected her to anything like this.
She had lived the life of a pampered young lady.
How could she have ever endured such treatment? She was utterly terrified, drowning in regret. If given another chance, she would never dare provoke Stefan again…
At the thought, she broke into another round of muffled sobs. Mixed with her fear was a faint trace of resentment… and a sliver of hope. Resentment, because Stefan had actually done this to her. Hope, because he had never allowed anyone else to humiliate her—did that mean… deep down, he still cared for her?
At this realization, Lexi's heart began to race uncontrollably.
Just then, the door creaked open.
Lexi's fearful gaze darted toward the entrance, her body shrinking further back as if pressed by sheer terror.
When Stefan stepped inside, this was the sight that greeted him—Lexi trembling like a cornered animal.
Her entire frame shook as she stared up at him.
In just a few short days, Stefan had grown even colder, his every expression laced with an icy detachment, his eyes fathomless and unreadable. There was no trace left of the man he once was. Instinctively, Lexi recoiled further, but she knew cowering wouldn’t solve anything. Gritting her teeth, her voice quivering with tears, she pleaded, "Stefan... I—I'm sorry. Truly, I am... Please, just let me go this once? I’m begging you..."
She lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes glistening with raw fear.
Most men would have softened at such a pitiful sight, no matter how hardened their hearts.
But Stefan was not most men.
Far from it.
This woman had taken his daughter from him. So even as she gazed up at him with those pleading, sorrowful eyes, not an ounce of sympathy stirred within him.
His expression remained indifferent as he studied her. Slowly, calmly, he spoke: "Who put you up to this?"
Lexi’s face stiffened. She whimpered, shaking her head frantically. "No one... No one made me do it, Stefan. It was all me—my fault. I just... I loved you too much. That’s why I acted the way I did. I’m sorry... I never imagined it would lead to this. Please... please forgive me."
By the end, her voice had frayed into a hoarse whisper.
Yet Stefan remained unmoved.
