Stefan's lips curled into a humorless smile as he heard Lexi's desperate cries.
Slowly turning his head, he fixed her with an icy stare. "Speak," he commanded.
Lexi wiped her tears with trembling fingers, her breath hitching as she stole a glance at him. "But you have to promise to protect me," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "If you don't guarantee my safety, I won't say a word. And if I don't... you'll never find out—"
She had to secure her own interests.
Otherwise, what would become of her?
Stefan's lips twitched in a cold, mocking smirk. "Are you bargaining with me?"
Lexi froze, stunned by the chilling amusement in his expression.
"Speak if you want," he continued, his voice dangerously calm. "If not, I'll find out who's behind this myself. Last chance—yes or no?"
She had never seen him like this before.
When they first met, Stefan had been a carefree young master—effortlessly handsome, his lazy charm giving him an air of untouchable elegance. Back then, she had fallen for him instantly.
But then...
He married someone else. Yet, his demeanor remained unchanged, just as she remembered.
Regret consumed her. She regretted everything.
That was why she had fought so desperately to steal him back from Allison. But she failed—not only failed, but lost everything. Even her father, who now languished in prison.
She hated Stefan for it.
But she hated Allison even more.
And that was how all of this had begun.
But the Stefan standing before her now was icy and indifferent, a far cry from the man she once knew. His demeanor sent chills down Lexi's spine, leaving her both terrified and bewildered.
As she lost herself in recollection, Stefan watched her with detached coldness. Noticing her distraction, the corners of his lips gradually curled into a faint, mocking smile.
He turned away and spoke to the people below with chilling finality: "Escort her out."
Those words jolted Lexi back to reality. Shaking her head violently, tears streaming down her face, she pleaded, "No, please... I'll talk. I'll tell you everything."
And so she did—spilling every detail she knew, particularly emphasizing Jerold's involvement. It had been Jerold who first approached her, and they had immediately hit it off, hatching this scheme together... Now, Lexi was drowning in regret. Had she known the catastrophic consequences, she would never have agreed to this madness.
Stefan listened expressionlessly, his face an unreadable mask. Lexi fidgeted nervously, unsure what thoughts churned behind those impassive eyes. But she hadn't forgotten her precarious situation. With tear-filled eyes and trembling lips, she ventured cautiously, "Could you... Let me go? Stefan, I swear I'll never do this again. Just spare me, and I'll disappear—you or Allison will never see me again. I promise!"
Mentioning Allison was her fatal mistake.
At that name, Stefan's carefully composed expression twisted momentarily into something terrifying—a flash of raw fury. But just as quickly, his features smoothed back into their usual detached calm.
He glanced briefly at Allison, then turned on his heel and walked away without a word. Lexi stared dumbfounded at his retreating figure, panic rising in her chest. "I was wrong!" she screamed after him, her voice breaking. "I admit it! Please, have mercy! For the sake of our past—Stefan, you can't do this to me! You can't!"
But her desperate pleas fell on deaf ears.
It was precisely this restraint that made him all the more terrifying. In other words, if Allison weren't still alive right now, there was no telling what Stefan might have done. Even now, he was barely holding himself together—only the thought that Allison might wake up someday, and the fact that his son still needed a father, kept him from losing control completely.
Otherwise, he would have already thrown all caution to the wind.
Realizing this, the assistant didn’t dare say another word. He pressed his lips together and simply replied, "Understood, Mr. Morris."
Stefan didn’t respond.
His gaze lifted slightly, drifting toward the distance, his eyes clouded with a fleeting haze—as if he were seeing something beyond the window.
...
After learning the identity of the mastermind from Lexi, Stefan immediately informed Lambert.
Unlike Stefan, however, Lambert had more on his mind.
Perhaps it was because Ariana remained unharmed that Lambert could afford to be calmer. He couldn’t help but wonder—how could Jerold, fresh out of prison, have immediately tracked down Lexi and formed an alliance with her? He knew his old friend well enough.
While Stefan might not have gone so far as to eliminate his younger brother entirely, he certainly wouldn’t have left him any resources to exploit.
So then...
Where had Jerold learned about Lexi? And how had he managed to collaborate with her?
As these thoughts crossed his mind, a cold, unreadable glint flickered in Lambert’s eyes.
