Even Chairman Harper, who had illegitimate children outside his marriage, dared not bring them home—preferring to adopt his brother's son rather than acknowledge his own.
All because his wife wouldn’t allow it.
Mrs. Harper wielded formidable influence. Her presence alone commanded respect. Even Chairman Harper had to tread carefully around her.
At that moment, Nathan was seated at the dining table, picking at his meal. His relationship with Mrs. Harper was decent—since he had been adopted as a child, he regarded her as his mother.
But more than anything, he feared her.
Just like Irene, he was intimidated by her.
Chairman Harper sat at the head of the table, eating with calm indifference. Nathan kept stealing glances at his parents, hesitating for a long while before finally mustering the courage to speak.
His fidgeting made Mrs. Harper frown.
"Spit it out," she said coldly.
Nathan flinched, meeting her gaze before nodding slightly. "Mom… well, Flora is pregnant with my child. I…" He wanted to ask when he and Flora could get married.
If they delayed any longer, her belly would start showing.
And by then, a proper wedding would be out of the question.
The Harper family would never host such a spectacle. The only option would be to wait until the child was born before holding the ceremony.
But by then, who knew what the situation would be? If they dragged it out any further, the child would be labeled illegitimate. Flora was terrified of that—hence her constant pressure on Nathan. Fortunately, he was deeply infatuated with her now, so he had given it serious thought before deciding to bring it up with his mother.
The moment Nathan saw his mother's face, the words caught in his throat.
After he finished speaking with noticeable unease, his mother's brows knitted tightly together. Nathan paled instantly, looking utterly at a loss.
Mrs. Harper cast a cool glance at her son and said flatly, "She's not right for you."
Most sons would have flared up at such a remark.
But Nathan didn’t dare.
His expression stiffened slightly, and he replied with reluctant defiance, "But... Mom, you agreed last time."
Mrs. Harper’s tone remained icy. "That was then. Do you think her behavior at the last birthday banquet was befitting of the future lady of the Harper family? Not only was she petty, but downright foolish. What kind of support could a woman like that possibly offer you?"
Nathan’s face darkened, but he still didn’t dare openly defy his mother. Instead, he argued weakly, "That was just an accident... And I love her for who she is, not for what she can do for me."
In other words, he was making it clear that if he had wanted a strategic marriage, he wouldn’t have chosen Flora in the first place.
Mrs. Harper gave a faint nod. "So you're telling me you just want a pretty vase to decorate the house?"
Chairman Harper coughed lightly, glancing between his wife and his nephew before silently returning to his meal. Truth be told, he wasn’t particularly capable—business had never been his forte. If not for his formidable wife, he would never have inherited the family leadership or the chairman’s seat.
Over the years, he had indulged in a carefree lifestyle while his wife managed the company, and he found this arrangement perfectly agreeable.
So naturally, he had no intention of siding with his nephew and risking his wife’s displeasure.
Mrs. Harper's expression remained impassive, but upon hearing those words, her eyes narrowed instantly.
Her assistant couldn't quite decipher her thoughts and simply waited in silence for her instructions.
With a sidelong glance, Mrs. Harper asked coolly, "Where is she?"
The assistant replied, "She’s already left. Said if you wanted to see her, you’d meet at the usual place."
A faint smirk tugged at Mrs. Harper’s lips, though her eyes remained icy. "Hmm," she responded indifferently before striding off toward her office without another glance.

Georgia had been waiting anxiously ever since leaving the Harper Corporation, her nerves frayed with anticipation.
Three long hours passed with no sign of the person she hoped to see. Just as she began to wonder if she had been mistaken—or if the other woman simply had no intention of meeting her—a figure finally approached.
Georgia lifted her gaze, and at the sight of the woman before her, a flicker of disbelief and tangled emotions flashed in her eyes.
The woman exuded an air of regal elegance, clad in a tailored suit, her expression aloof and her gaze sharp. Just her presence alone carried an unspoken weight, an undeniable aura of authority.
Unlike Georgia’s gentle demeanor, Mrs. Harper’s bearing was frosty enough to make others shrink back.
Yet, despite their differences, both women were strikingly beautiful.
A closer look would reveal that though their features each held their own distinct charm, there was a subtle resemblance in their eyes, only where Georgia’s were warm and tender, Mrs. Harper’s were cold as winter frost.
