Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 40

William removed his mask and gave Annie a thumbs-up. "The surgery was a complete success."

Annie's steps faltered. Frozen to the spot, she wanted to say something, but her words seemed to be caught in her throat.

Seeing her in such a state, William didn't crack a joke for once. Instead, he walked up to her and gave reminders in a steady and unusually serious voice.

"Mrs. Steward Senior's heart issues have been resolved. As long as she gets proper recovery and keeps her emotions in control, forget one month—she'll have no problem living more than ten years in good health."

The words hit Annie like a thunderclap, crushing the massive stone weighing on her chest. Her knees buckled, and she could barely stand straight.

"Thank you… Thank you, Dr. Lawson… I can't thank you enough."

Annie had stayed up all night. The day after the surgery, in the early morning, her eyes were bloodshot and red-rimmed.

On the hospital bed, Irene's eyelashes fluttered before she slowly opened her eyes.

"Grandma! You're awake!" Annie called out in pleasant surprise. She immediately leaned in and asked, "How do you feel? Is there any discomfort?"

Looking at her haggard face, Irene's lips moved slowly as she whispered in a frail voice, "Silly child…"

Just then, the door quietly opened. Gary walked in carrying a thermal flask.

"Mrs. Steward Senior, you're awake!"

His gaze landed on Annie, and his brows drew together. "You look exhausted, Ms. Steward. I'll be here, so you should go home and get some proper sleep. Mrs. Steward Senior won't feel at ease if she sees you in such a state."

When Annie saw the worry in Irene's eyes and the firm insistence in Gary's, the nerves she'd kept tensed all day and night finally loosened a little. It was true that she'd reached her limit.

"Alright then. I'll get some rest and come back later."

When she returned to her apartment, she fell asleep the moment she hit the pillow.

Her sleep was fitful and uneasy. When she woke up, the sky was fully dark outside.

She stepped out of her bedroom and saw Christian sitting on the couch in the living room. Light spilled over his face and highlighted his handsome facial features.

Annie instinctively held her breath, just as he turned around and noticed her.

"Have you had enough sleep? I heard from Dr. Carrington that Irene's surgery went well. To celebrate her recovery, shall I take you out to dinner?"

Her instinct was to refuse since she wanted to visit the hospital and check on Irene again. The truth about Irene's passing in her past life had left her deeply traumatised.

As if reading her mind, Christian raised his other hand and waved it slightly.
