Cecilia seethed after noticing that the delivered message was sent to Annie. Was Sean the one who'd brought William back?
Damn it! Why would he go to such lengths for the old, dying Irene?
A wave of fear washed over Cecilia.
Sean was her only lifeline, so she absolutely couldn't lose him. Why couldn't the haunting Annie just vanish from their world for good?
That wouldn't do. Cecilia vowed to come up with a plan.
…
The next morning, Annie woke up to a splitting headache. The aftermath of last night's drinking left her mind feeling foggy and sluggish.
When she shifted and felt something heavy pressing against her arm, she turned her head, and her pupils immediately constricted in shock.
Christian had fallen deeply asleep right beside her bed with his head propped on his arm. He was still wearing yesterday's suit, but the tie was loose, and the top two buttons at his collar were undone.
Exhaustion was etched across his face.
The shock sobered her instantly.
Why was he in her room? How did she even get home last night?
Her mind was still a mess when Christian's eyelashes fluttered, then he slowly opened his eyes.
Noticing that she was awake relaxed him visibly. The worry in his eyes melted into gentleness as he softly murmured, "You're awake."
His voice was raspy from sleep, yet annoyingly pleasant to the ears. Rolling his stiff shoulders, he got up and said, "You drank way too much last night, so don't do that again. Stay here in bed, and I'll get you some warm milk."
Before leaving, he ruffled her hair with casual familiarity before walking out of the bedroom.
Watching as his tall silhouette disappeared beyond the door, Annie finally relaxed her tense nerves. It struck her that Christian had brought her home and stayed by her side all night.
Warmth spread in her chest, mixed with emotions she couldn't quite name.
She picked up her phone, intending to check the time and text Gary to ask about Irene.
That was when her screen lit up, and a text from an unfamiliar number popped up on WhatsApp. It was from Sean.
Frowning, she tapped the message and almost laughed out loud after reading it.
