Annie frowned. "But Ms. Hudson, the final EVL draft is due any minute. I really can't leave now."
"I know." Roxanne let out a long sigh, her tone helpless and her gaze earnest.
"Annie, I know how important the EVL project is to you. But this field trip is just as valuable. You were away from the industry for two years. Getting out there and seeing things will inspire you and help you find your own sense of style."
Annie fell quiet. Roxanne hit her soft spot. Ever since she reincarnated, her mind had been consumed by revenge and rewriting her fate. She had the education and the skills, but her design work still felt like something was missing. Maybe she really did need time away to settle her thoughts.
The EVL concept was already fully formed in her head. Once she got back, she just needed to sketch it out. She should be able to make the deadline.
"Alright, I'll go." Annie nodded at last.
"That's great! I already arranged everything. You'll head out in a bit." Relief washed over Roxanne's face.
That was awfully fast. A flicker of doubt crossed Annie's mind, but looking at Roxanne's expression, which was practically relieved to the point of collapse, she pushed the thought aside. Maybe the project really was that urgent.
Annie had barely packed up and stepped out of the studio when a figure emerged from the pantry. It was Cecilia.
Cecilia walked to Roxanne's office door with a polite smile plastered on her face. "Ms. Hudson, thank you."
Roxanne's expression darkened instantly, but Cecilia continued as if she didn't notice. "I'm sure Sean won't forget about Mosaic Studio. Frost Group will keep investing."
Roxanne shot Cecilia a cold glare and shut the office door without a word.
Cecilia's smile didn't falter, but a flash of contempt glinted in her eyes. So much for acting righteous. In the end, Roxanne still had to listen to Cecilia.
Cecilia hugged the file in her arms and headed toward Annie's now empty desk. It was the file on Parker Group's Internal Staff Uniform Design Proposal.
It was the project Annie worked so hard to secure, but now it wasn't hers anymore.
…
The taxi made its way up the slick mountain road. Rain hammered against the windows.
Annie sat in the back seat, watching the scenery blur past, that earlier suspicion creeping back in. Everything had been too rushed that it felt intentional, as if someone wanted her gone.
Her phone in her pocket buzzed, breaking her thoughts. It was Suzanna. "Babe, what are you doing? Where's Uncle Chris? Did something happen between you two?"
Suzanna's voice was full of hints. A flush spread across Annie's cheeks. She instinctively glanced at the driver. "Stop talking nonsense."
"Oh, getting shy, are we?" Suzanna cackled.
