Christian's smile stiffened. He cleared his throat and schooled his expression back to being cold and solemn. He then said, "I'm leaving. I need to go home and cook for my wife."
After saying that, he grabbed the coat that he had draped over his chair and walked out of the room in wide strides. He looked like he was scrambling away.
Christian's behavior stunned Linda. She hadn't even submitted her work reports to him. After a while, she sighed helplessly and left with him.
…
When Annie got home, she found dinner already on the table. Christian turned around upon hearing the door open. "You're home. Wash your hands, and we'll eat," he said.
Annie walked up to him, smiling, and placed her handbag on the couch.
"I joined EVL today," she said cheerfully as she approached him. "You don't need to drive me to work anymore. I can travel to and from work on my own."
Then, she added as if she just recalled something, "EVL and Parker Group's headquarters are in different buildings.
"People from other branches are not allowed to wander the building without official business. So, I'm afraid we won't be able to see each other at the office anymore."
She was just stating a fact, but Christian froze. He turned and suddenly took one step closer to Annie.
His tall frame overshadowed hers. He leaned in close to Annie's ear and asked, "Are you saying that you want to see me in the office every day?"
Annie's heart skipped a beat as he was way too close to her!
"I'm not! I didn't say that!" she instinctively retorted, though her cheeks burned.
"I just think that it's nice to have someone I know in the office with me." To hide her panic, she impulsively reached out to pat his head.
"Be good, now." She was stunned by her own words.
Christian was just as stunned. At that moment, Annie wished that she could just crawl into a hole and die.
