When Linda glanced at the almost complete design draft on Annie's desk, she was impressed. However, her expression remained stern.
She said, "That's enough. Pause your work here today. Go home."
Stunned, Annie said, "I only need to add the finishing touches. I can finish it very—"
"Missing one night of work won't make much of a difference," Linda interrupted her. She continued, "Pushing yourself like this nonstop won't guarantee a good design. Your mind needs to rest, too.
"I've seen how hard you've been working all this time. Go home and get a good night's sleep. I believe you'll do better when you continue your work tomorrow."
Although Linda's tone was stern, her words made it clear that she cared. It warmed Annie's heart.
She was indeed tired. She just really wanted to use this opportunity to prove herself. She said, "Okay, Ms. Lopez."
Annie nodded obediently and finally let go of her pen. "I'll tidy up a little and go home."
Linda's tense expression relaxed. She could finally report to Christian that she had done as he asked.
Annie massaged her shoulder, grabbed her handbag, and walked out of the office building. It was time for her to head home.
The sky was darkening. When Annie opened the door, the foyer's motion-sensor lights turned on automatically.
Only a single lamp glowed in the living room, and the television played at a low volume.
Christian had fallen asleep on the couch, a thin blanket draped over him.
Annie tiptoed to the couch and leaned in to tuck him in properly. Even though he was sound asleep, his eyelashes fluttered when Annie approached, and he slowly opened his eyes.
When he saw Annie, his face crumpled into a look of a wounded puppy. Christian sat up and grabbed her wrist in one swift motion. With a gentle pull, Annie stumbled and fell onto the couch.
"Ann, it's been a long time since you last came home on time. I thought you didn't want me anymore." He buried his face into her neck and breathed in her scent.
Christian wasn't really asleep.
He had woken up the moment he heard the door unlock. This was just his tactic to make Annie feel sorry for him and to remind her that someone was waiting for her at home.
Straightening up, Christian saw how tired she looked. He asked, "Have you eaten, Ann?" He stood before she could answer, saying, "I'll cook something for you."
"Don't bother," Annie replied reflexively. "At the office, I already…"
Unfortunately, Christian had already gone to the kitchen before she could finish her sentence.
Annie shook her head, a mix of helplessness and amusement crossing her face, as she looked at his tall, broad back. She thought that it felt nice to have someone fuss over her like this.
Suddenly, the phone that she had left on the coffee table started ringing. It was from an unknown number.
