The discarded paper was an ultrasound report. Where the patient's name should have been was one Annie knew all too well—Kayla Monroe. That was Maeve's real name.
Then, in the test results section, several words were clearly printed: "Intrauterine early pregnancy, approximately eight weeks."
It turned out that Maeve was two months pregnant. At that moment, Annie understood everything.
That was why Amelia had been so critical of the design that emphasized the waist, though she couldn't quite explain why. It was no wonder she had insisted on changing it to a loose, full-skirted dress.
So that was the problem.
It wasn't that they were unhappy with her design. On the contrary, they simply didn't dare to use it.
What they needed was a gown that could perfectly conceal a baby bump without making the actress look bloated or messy.
Annie carefully folded the report and slipped it into her handbag. It never occurred to her that an unexpected twist would present itself like this.
Maeve was pregnant.
For an actress who had just won the Best Actress Award and was at the peak of her career, this was nothing short of a ticking time bomb. But for Annie, this was her only chance to wedge herself into the situation.
Just then, the studio doors were pushed open from the inside. Maeve stepped out, surrounded by her staff.
She had changed out of her filming costume into a casual outfit. Although she looked tired, she still had an undeniable glow about her.
Taking a deep breath, Annie straightened up and walked forward.
She said, "Hello, Ms. Monroe." The clear tone of her voice brought Maeve to a halt.
Maeve turned around and found herself facing a woman whose striking composure was matched only by the intense focus in her gaze. "And you are?" she asked.
"I'm a designer from EVL, Annie Steward."
Maeve remembered now.
During her break earlier, she had overheard her staff mention that a designer from EVL had been stopped at the reception. Rather than leaving, the designer had been waiting in the lounge the whole time.
But Maeve didn't expect her to still be here. Such persistence surprised her, but it stirred nothing in her beyond that.
