Annie snapped back to reality and looked up.
At some point, Christian had come to stand beside her. He was dressed in comfortable, casual attire. He didn't ask her about her work. Instead, he warmly said, "Ann, it's late."
Christian's voice was low and magnetic. It was like the strings of a cello, instantly smoothing the frayed edges of her nerves. He said, "Rest early and don't overthink."
Annie looked at him. She saw nothing but raw compassion in the depths of his eyes.
At that, the stiffness in her shoulders visibly eased. She sighed and replied, "Alright."
As he watched her carry the warm milk into the bedroom, the tenderness on Christian's face slowly faded. He still remembered Linda's earlier report.
The rejection of EVL's project weighed heavily on Annie, darkening her day. Yet by evening, her mood had shifted to a complex blend of hope and anxiety.
He figured that something must have happened.
Christian didn't like seeing her burdened by work, and he liked even less the feeling of things slipping out of his control. So, he took out his phone and dialed a number. The call was picked up almost immediately.
"Mr. Parker."
"Michael," Christian said, his voice unreadable.
"Look into what happened today with Kayla's team." He paused, then added, "Especially anything related to EVL."
Whatever it was, he needed to make sure that the outcome was what Annie wanted.
The next day, when Annie stepped through the doors of EVL, she still felt uneasy.
Preparing for the worst, she had even begun planning her next steps in case the project fell through.
