"Do you want to have lunch with me this weekend?" Nathan asked Christina as they prepared for their last class that afternoon. He had always wanted to pop the question for a while but he didn't exactly know how she would take it but now, he had finally summoned up enough courage to ask.
Christina was nice, warm, charming and a beautiful woman and there was something about her that somehow sparked his interest. He noted it from the very day that they met that he wouldn't be able to stay away and he couldn't but with Christina, one can never tell.
Although she was friendly, he had noticed that she was very distant when it came to having guys close to her. She tends to avoid them and sink into her shell. It was a miracle that she even let him this close.
Maybe it was because they were almost alike in terms of upbringing since they were both raised by religious people and all but he didn't want that kind of connection between them. He wanted more.
The friendship was more or less a way to get her to open up more to him so that she brings her wall down eventually but somehow, it was proving more difficult than he anticipated.
"We could go somewhere nice and hang out. Just the two of us." He added with a smile.
Christina whipped her head towards his direction at that question, not knowing how she wanted to answer that.
"Lunch? Together? Just the two of us?" She repeated, hands gripping her books a little too tightly than intended.
"Trust me, It's not what you're thinking in that sense. It's just lunch between two friends." He assured her and she felt her tense shoulders relax. Thankfully, he was able to soothe her worries cause she didn't exactly know how to turn him down if it was really a date and she didn't want to lie either.
"Sure, I'll have lunch with you if I'm less busy." Christina answered. "I still need to focus on my work and there's a lot of things left to do."
"With him, right?" Nathan asked, eyes narrowing down at her. He knew that it was just a silly project but he can't help but think that it could be more between them.
Although Christina openly hated him, it still didn't help to shake off the fear that was slowly eating out at him.
That man is trouble. A big one. Since the very first day he saw him pull up to pick her up, he felt it in his gut that, that man was trouble. Even the way he spoke to him was proof that he was one of those men with ill intentions.
"Who? Max? Yeah." She answered. "He's been of great help to me ever since we started working together."
"You sound happy about it." Nathan stated. "Almost seems like you two are on great terms now. You even followed him willingly on a trip to an orphanage during the weekend. Is that friendship I smell brewing between the two of you?"
He still couldn't get her to go out with him but she was already going out with someone else without putting up a fight.
Christina lets out an exasperated sigh. She didn't know why but she somehow found his questions tiring to say the least. "Not exactly on great terms or close friends but we've somehow found a common ground to walk on so it's bearable now."
Nathan couldn't believe his ears. Bearable? Common ground to walk on? What was happening? Just last week she couldn't stand his presence and was trying to do everything to get away from it and now it's suddenly bearable?
"We thought it'd be for the best rather than having to walk on eggshells around my sister and brother-in-law."
"What exactly did he do to you?" Nathan questioned curiously, his head titled with a puzzled look on his face. "You only talk about how you don't like being around him but you don't exactly say why you hate it."
"Whatever he did, was it really that bad that you can't talk about it? Even to me?"
"It's a long story Nathan and sadly, I don't feel like sharing. At least not now." She was quick to add before dismissing the conversation.
Nathan wanted to ask more questions but as usual, she was closed off and until she willingly opens up the conversation, he won't be able to push further. That's Christina for you.
The rest of the day goes by in a blur and Christina decided to head back home. Nathan had offered to take her home but she turned down his request. She wasn't ready for that milestone of their friendship yet. Maybe in the future when she feels more comfortable about it.
Christina arrived home and made dinner for herself after getting off the phone with Hera. She had expected a text or call from Max about his coming but he was yet to do so.
