"Thank you for lunch Hera. It was delicious as always." Max complimented with a peck on her cheeks as they maids trooped in to start clearing up the table.
"You're welcome Max." She smiled back at him, grateful that he enjoyed the meal. It was always a delight to have him at home with them.
"Urm...Bryce," Christina beckoned, with a gentle tap on his folded hands. "Will it be possible for you to drive me home?"
"Oh sorry honey, I would've loved to but I still have some work to finish but Max can drop you off." Bryce suggested, signalling him with his eyes for compliance.
Max on the other hand was livid. Why would Bryce put him on the spot like that without even asking if he was okay with that? He had been planning how to make a smooth getaway and now, his supposed best friend had ruined it.
"Uh, no worries. I'll just take a cab." Christina countered with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"He might be busy and I don't want to bother him with something like this." Her eyes glanced over at Max who looked away almost immediately.
She knew that he didn't want to do that and for some reason, she felt hurt. She never expected that his anger would go to this extent at all.
Even during lunch, he barely talked to her and only did so when the conversation involved her because he couldn't avoid it then. And to make matters worse, he was so natural at it that no one but her knew what was going on.
Usually, he'd tease and say jokes but today was just different. Enough time had passed for him to stop being mad at her, has it not?
And why does this even bother her? She has always tried to stay a hundred feet away from him, to keep a safe distance, to get him to stay clear off her path but now that he's doing it willingly, it just felt sad for some reason.
Was it because she was slowly getting used to him? Whatever reason it was, she hated it because she doesn't like feeling this way.
Max didn't want to stare at her much longer than intended which prompted him to look away. There's something about those eyes that always, for some reason brings him down to his knees and he doesn't want to get lost in them.
The anger and disappointment that he was feeling at the moment might just dissipate if he gave in.
"Buddy, I still have to meet with the interior designer I spoke to you about and—"
"It's on your way there." Bryce interrupted. Why couldn't he just get the message. Sometimes, his friend was tone deaf and pretty much oblivious to certain situations.
"You can just drop her off and continue with your journey please." He added and Max sighed deeply. There's no getting out of this one. Thanks to his friend, he was stuck here.
"Don't worry dear, he'll drop you off." Bryce assured Christina who wasn't so sure that this was a good idea.
If she had known that it would result in this then she could've taken a cab home just like she did coming here without asking. Why didn't she even think about it earlier.
"Alright." She nodded in approval. "And that's again for lunch Hera. I'll let you know as soon as I arrive."
"Of course." Hera said and they both shared a hug.
"I'll text you later buddy." Bryce hollered at Max at they made their way out of the apartment. If only he knew that Max was plotting to strangle him in ten different ways.
