Chapter 3

The timeline is a day before the doctor’s visit.

Karissa

I gradually stirred awake, my head throbbing in sync with my racing heart, and my body screaming in protest. Gritting my teeth, I struppled to pry open my heavy eyelids, but they refused to cooperate, stubbornly remaining halfclosed. Exhaustion claims my body, leaving me feeling heavier than usual. With a pitiful groan, I collapsed back onto the pillow, too weak to muster the energy to move.

I lay there for a moment, letting out a soft sigh as I slowly sat up. My hands instinctively cradled my barely there bump, and a smile spread across my face. My baby. The thought sent a wake of unadulterated joy coursing through me topping the lingering aches and pains.

The thought of becoming a mother filled me with an overwhelming sense of purpose and love. I would soon have a precious, innocent) life to nurture, cherish, and that realization brought me breeze of peace and happiness that cooled down all my trouble for the moment.

My narrowing gaze swept across the room, taking in the tidy space. Everything was in its place, unlike the chaotic mess I remembered leaving behind when I fell asleep. My clothes were folded neatly over the chair, my shoes were out of sight, and my handbag sat organized on the makeup table. The book I’d been reading that was on my bed when I drifted off and a glass of water laid on my bedside table.

Defeated comfort brings me to the realisation that Deckard must have been the one to tidy up. I let out a deep grateful breath, feeling a warmth spread through my chest as my eyes pricked with tears. He was truly was here, and the knowledge wrapped me in a cloak of comforting security. I had acted on impulse, calling him in a moment of weakness, and yet he had shown up, No questions asked. His kindness and willingness to help only made me feel more grateful and, at the same time, more guilty for relying on him this way.

Why did he have all the qualities I had once desired in a partner? His kindness and compassion were a painful recalling of everything 1 thought I had found in Keith, but ultimately discovered was just a period of life he was going through with

I stepped out of the bathroom, feeling slightly more human after brushing my teeth and taming my tangled locks into a low ponytail. As I entered the kitchen, the savory aroma of sautéed vegetables and chicken enveloped me, making my stomach growl with anticipation.

My eyes closed in appreciation, and I breathed in deeply, letting the delicious aroma wash over me I made my way to the stove, where Deckard was busy fixing up a feast.

Good evening Hamsty,he greeted warmly as always, without even turning around. I could sense the smile on his face, and it was infectious my own lips curled up into one. This man had a gift for making anyone smile, even on their darkest days. He was a man of unwavering integrity, the kind of person who would rather face hardship than cause harm to those he cared about.

Hey.I replied, forcing more enthusiasm into my voice. Despite my genuine gratitude for his presence, I couldn’t shake off the crushing guilt that had been throne on my chest. He had dropped everything to be here for me, I was slightly ashamed to act so recklessly in during a break down.

Deckard turned around, his bright smile faltering as he took in my uneasy expression. A soft sigh escaped his lips as he walked towards me, his eyes narrowing slightly as he searched my face. I attempted to drop the turmoil inside, but his uncanny ability to read me made it impossible. He loomed over me, lus piercing gaze locked onto mine, and I could feel his concern radiating towards me like a pointed finger.

You met him, didn’t you?He didn’t ask but stated his doubts out. Relief washed over me as I realized he was asking about Keith, not about the guilt and anxiety that had been plaguing me with his arrival, fearing it would come across as ungrateful for his unwavering support, I didn’t want to bring that up now. I felt the unease coming back, my mind racing with the implications of discussing Keith’s visit.

Yeah, I did,I replied, my voice a little stronger now that the conversation wasn’t headed in a direction that would force me to confront my mortification.

Come here,he whispered, his eyes filled with a deep understanding, compassionately his arms open wide, offering, and I stepped into them, letting him envelop me in a pleasent serene hug. Securing me in a comfortable position his broad arms wrapped smoothly around me, holding me with a tender care that made me feel like a delicate dandelion. I stood there gratified in the moment, as he gently cradled me against his tough chest. His steady heartbeat a calming melody itself, and I let out a defeated sigh, snuggling my
