“What’s wrong, Hamsty?” he asks softly, his voice glazed with a painful edge that made me feel like I was breaking him.

“Are you sure?” He enquires again, his eyes glinting with helplessness that I couldn’t quite decipher. I nodded, but he didn’t seem convinced.

“Do me a favor,” he stated soft but firm as he carefully guided me towards the couch like I was just shot. I looked up at him, feeling a little bewildered and amused but I didn’t protest.

“Sat here and let me bring you something to eat,” he instructed, his eyes roaming over my body with a critical gaze. “You need your strength,” he added with a gentle scolding “You’re not taking care of yourself,” but his brown eyes conveyed well about the depth of his worry. He looked tired, his usual freshness diminished, and I knew that he must have been worried sick about me. Fresh pang of guilt struck my heart, and I felt a regret crash over me. What right did I have to call him to drag him into my mess?

“Karry,” a soothing call as he knelt in front of me, taking both of my hands in his big ones. His eyes locked onto mine, filled with a deep sincerity. “You know I’m here if you need to talk about anything, right?” his tone imploring me to open up to him.

“I know,” I nodded, managing a convincing nod. As I looked into his eyes, I couldn’t help but feel estrange wonder at this kind, compassionate man. He was so down–to–earth, so genuine, and yet, so incredibly attractive. I found myself thinking, not for the first time, how it was possible that he was still single. Had all women gone blind? Didn’t they see the amazing person he was?

My mood suddenly shifted, lightening as I gazed at him, his caring demeanor and gentle eyes lifting my spirits. I couldn’t help but tease him, trying to lead us away from the heavy emotions that had been hovering over.

“So, you flew here on any one call? And then cooked and cleaned?” I teased a playful smile spreading across my face. He caught on to my mood and teased me right back, his smile matching mine in width and warmth.

“did,” he admitted his eyes sparkling with amusement, as he leaned in closer. But then, he did something that always annoyed me – he licked my nose.

“Deckard!!!” 1 groaned, slapping his arm in mocking outrage. He fell back, chuckling at me, his contagious laughter making me hold back a smile
