They were desperate to keep their ties with the Williams family, and that meant Camila Davis had to go. She was the obstacle in their way, and Cynthia Lee knew it. But Nicholas Lee didn’t want to make enemies with the Williams family over this. Cynthia understood. She flashed a confident smile. “I’m not stupid. Of course I won’t do it myself. Trust me.”
As soon as their conversation ended, Cynthia wasted no time. She had someone secretly arrange a meeting with Lavinia Roberts. Cynthia was always calculating, always careful. She knew if this ever came to light, she could get dragged down with it, so she made sure not to show up herself. She sent her private bodyguard instead.
His name was Patton. Lavinia didn’t know him, but the message he brought mentioned Camila Davis, and that was all it took. Lavinia agreed to meet without hesitation.
Ever since she’d been kicked out of the Roberts family, Lavinia’s life had fallen apart. If it hadn’t been for Camila Davis, she would have married into the Welch family by now and become Mrs. Smith. Instead, she was stuck with a spoiled brat from a washed up family, just because he liked her face. He was generous with money, but only Lavinia knew how miserable she really was.
Whenever he was in a bad mood, he’d take it out on her, hitting her, slapping her, leaving bruises all over her body where no one could see. The once pampered Ms. Roberts had never suffered like this before. Every day felt like torture, but she was too afraid to leave. She had nowhere else to go. To keep him from tossing her aside, she forced herself to play along and pretend everything was fine.
Patton, following Cynthia’s orders, went straight for her weak spot. “Let’s be honest, with what you have right now, there’s no way you can touch Camila Davis. I know you won’t want to hear this, but if you don’t do something, you’ll never get your revenge. Are you really okay with that?”
Lavinia’s hate for Camila was all-consuming, but she knew exactly why her life had turned out like this. And she never forgot that Camila had Dennis Williams behind her, a man she couldn’t afford to mess with.
Patton saw her hesitation and kept going. “You don’t have to do it alone. You’re not the only one who wants to get back at Camila Davis. The Smith family is planning to make a move on her too. They want to kidnap her daughter. This is the perfect chance for you. You can help out behind the scenes, and if things go wrong, just blame the Smiths. No one will look at you.”
Lavinia was tempted, but she wasn’t stupid. She narrowed her eyes at Patton. “Who are you working for? Why help me? Or… are you just using me?”
Patton just shrugged. “Does it really matter? The enemy of your enemy is your friend. Sometimes it’s better not to ask too many questions.”
Lavinia scoffed. “If you won’t even tell me who you are, how am I supposed to trust you?”
She had a point. Patton paused for a couple of seconds, then gave in. “Alright. My boss is Sandra Taylor.”
