Lightning’s leash was handed off to a bodyguard.
“Go find Lillian,” he said.
Like he understood every word, Lightning took off, tearing across the lawn and out of the gated community. The bodyguards sprinted after him.
They were just outside the gates when they caught a glimpse of a car speeding away.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Lightning chased the car, barking like crazy.
“There!” one of the bodyguards shouted.
They tried to catch up, but the car was already gone. One of them quickly memorized the license plate. “Get the car. We have to follow them.”
The others heard the commotion and pulled up in their own vehicle right away.
Lillian’s grandparents ran outside too. The scene nearly made them collapse.
“Lillian… My Lillian…”
She was gone, just like that.
Camila was still at the research lab. Because of the strict rules, her phone was locked away in a secure locker. She had no clue that anything had happened at home, let alone that Lillian had been kidnapped.
It wasn’t until Mr. Williams, her father, rushed into the lab, panic in his eyes, that she finally heard the news. The color drained from her face.
Lillian was her whole world. With her daughter missing, nothing else mattered.
“Professor, I have to go home,” she said in a shaky voice, turning to her supervisor. Her parents must have been terrified. She needed to get back right away.
Mr. Williams nodded, his voice gentle. “Go ahead. I’ll take care of your leave with the institute.”
Jarvis Peters, a close colleague, gave her a supportive smile. “Don’t worry. We’ll handle things here. Just check on your family. We’ll pull some late nights and keep everything on track.”
“Thank you. Thank you, all of you.”
She didn’t waste another second. After a quick goodbye, Camila rushed out to meet up with Dennis Williams.
Dennis was already at the airport. His team had followed the car as soon as it left the community. They confirmed Lillian was taken onto a plane and immediately started digging into the flight details and the passenger list.
