Dennis listened to her, thinking back to what happened last night. He couldn’t help but wonder if the drug had finally worn off. Was that why her memory had come back? Whatever the reason, the most important thing was that she still remembered him. That was all that mattered.

Last night had been torture for Dennis. The thought of her forgetting him again was something he never wanted to experience.

He didn’t bother explaining what had happened. Instead, he looked at her softly and said, “You slept so long, I was starting to think you’d forgotten me. Now that I know you haven’t, let’s get you washed up. You didn’t eat anything last night. I had Aaron pick up some breakfast for you. You shouldn’t go hungry.”

Camila gave him a gentle smile and let him carry her to the bathroom to freshen up.

When they came out, Aaron had already returned with breakfast. He’d brought plain millet porridge, careful not to upset her stomach. Once she finished eating, Camila said she wanted to be discharged. She was a doctor, but she had always hated the sharp smell of disinfectant in hospitals.

Seeing that she seemed okay, Dennis agreed and asked Aaron to handle the paperwork. But just as everything seemed fine, Camila’s expression twisted in pain. She gripped her head, feeling nerves inside her skull twist and pull, each wave of agony worse than the last.

“Camila, what’s wrong?” Dennis’s face paled. He rushed to her side, pressing the nurse’s call button. “Don’t be scared, a doctor is on the way.”

Camila couldn’t hear a word he was saying. Her head throbbed so badly it felt like it might split open. When the pain finally eased, her surroundings seemed unfamiliar, like she’d landed in a different world. She realized she was leaning against a man she didn’t recognize.

Panicked, she shoved him away, her eyes full of the same suspicion and fear as the night before. “Who are you?”

The color drained from Dennis’s face.

Aaron, just coming back into the room, stopped in his tracks at the scene. The situation clicked for him immediately, and he ran back out the door. “I’m getting the doctor!”

The doctor arrived almost at a run, Aaron practically dragging him along. Under everyone’s anxious stare, he re-examined Camila.

“What’s going on?” Dennis asked, worry written all over his face as he watched Camila.
