Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1037

They were apart, but the phone made it feel like they were sitting side by side, both looking up at the same stretch of night sky.

Sarah Brown felt something quietly growing between them. Maybe it had been there for a while, but only now was she starting to realize it. She must really like Larry Adams. Why else would her heart ache for him, or make her want to do something nice for this man? She hadn’t noticed the feeling before, but now, sitting together in silence under the stars, the truth was impossible to ignore. Neither of them spoke, but it didn’t matter. The quiet said everything.

Over at the Williams house, the mood couldn’t have been more different.

Mr. Williams, who always went to bed early, was still wide awake. He wasn’t the least bit sleepy. If anything, he was more alive than ever, fueled by pure frustration, all because of his oldest grandson.

The grand hall was lit up like daytime, and his voice carried through every corner.

“Unbelievable! Camila goes through something huge, and you don’t say a word. You kept it all to yourself. Do you think I’m some unreasonable old man? Haven’t I already given you two my blessing? Why would you hide this from me? If I hadn’t seen Camila myself today, I’d still be in the dark. You were just going to keep lying to me, weren’t you?”

He was so angry, his hands were shaking.

Dennis Williams let his grandfather rant. After a while, when he finally paused for breath, Dennis tried to explain, “I didn’t tell you because I was worried about your health. I know you care about Camila, and if you’d known, you would have been just as worried as the rest of us. The test results weren’t even out yet. There was nothing you could do. Now that everything’s out in the open, you know, and it’s not too late.”

The calm way Dennis explained things only made Mr. Williams angrier. He started pacing, his voice booming louder.

“Not too late? Have you seen what they’ve done to my granddaughter-in-law?” He scolded Dennis again, then turned his anger toward the Smiths. “That Smith family is the worst. No shame at all. They didn’t value her when they had her, and now they won’t let go. They want her back, just like that? They want to have everything their way. Who do they think they are?”

He turned back to Dennis, eyes sharp. “That’s it? You just came back? You didn’t teach them a real lesson?”

Dennis knew his grandfather was standing up for Camila, so he nodded. “I did. I made it clear they can’t mess with us.”

He explained what he’d done, but it wasn’t enough for Mr. Williams. “That’s all? Are you kidding me? You should have gone harder! They hurt Camila so much that she lost her memory, and Lillian must have been scared out of her wits. How could you just let them off? If you ask me, you should take down the whole Smith family.”

Dennis smiled just a little, hearing his grandfather go on and on. Who would have thought the old man, who was so against their relationship before, would turn out to be Camila’s biggest supporter? It actually made Dennis happy.
