“Sure, I’ll get it done as soon as I can.” Patton didn’t even hesitate before agreeing.

He moved fast. The very next day, while the creepy old man was out on business, a maid delivered Sandra Taylor’s lunch and quietly let her out. She sneaked Sandra away, hiding her in the trunk of the car they used for grocery shopping.

That’s how Sandra Taylor slipped out of the old man’s house, and Daniel, her son, went with her.

Sandra had suffered in that house, but Daniel’s life had been just as bad. Every day, the old man beat him. He had no real ties to Daniel, so he never held back. Sandra wasn’t any better. Whenever she was upset, she would take it out on Daniel too. The kid who used to be so lively and mischievous had turned quiet and withdrawn. He barely talked at all anymore.

Patton set them up in a shabby little house out in the suburbs. “Don’t complain about the place,” he told Sandra. “This is the only way you’ll stay hidden from that pervert.”

He glanced at Daniel, then said to Sandra, “Try to get your son cleaned up. You never know, he might come in handy someday.”

“Alright,” Sandra nodded, taking his words seriously. Daniel was still young and couldn’t do much, but having him around was definitely better than being alone.

After Patton left, Sandra called Daniel over. He stood in front of her like a zombie, just staring blankly.

Sandra tried to soften her voice, almost coaxing him, “Daniel, don’t you want to have your old life back? Go back to Dad Jordan, get everything you want?”

He looked at her, and for a second, something flickered in his eyes, like he actually felt a little hope. He nodded hard. “Yeah! I want that!”

Sandra kept coaxing him. “Then you have to do what I say. If you listen, I won’t hit you anymore.”

Daniel nodded instantly. “I’ll do whatever you say, Mom!”

“Good boy…” Sandra smiled, but there was something a little scary about it.

Meanwhile, Patton went back to update Cynthia Lee and told her how things were going with Sandra Taylor. Cynthia was happy with the progress and gave him new instructions. “Starting tomorrow, I want you to give Sandra Taylor updates on Camila Davis’s whereabouts every day. The more details, the better.”
