After a moment of hesitation, someone finally spoke up, looking right at Mr. Adams. “Mr. Adams, Earle Warren is right. The Smith Group needs someone to take the lead, and Larry is the best person for it.”
“I agree,” someone else added. “He’s proven he’s more than capable of running the Adams Group. When can we get him back?”
“We can’t afford any more delays. Every extra day the Smith Group’s projects are on hold means more losses for us.”
The voices in the room grew louder, everyone chiming in, all asking him to bring Larry Adams back.
Mr. Adams glanced around at the group, his resolve slipping away. Edwin Warren was right. Right now, Larry was his only option. The grandson he never really believed in somehow managed to win everyone over, and he’d done it in no time at all. Mr. Adams always knew Larry was talented, but he’d been too stubborn to admit it.
He let out a long sigh, finally giving in.
That same evening, Mr. Adams went to Larry’s place. The new housekeeper opened the door and let him in without a second thought.
Larry had no clue his grandfather was coming. He was gathered around the dinner table with the Lane family, sharing a meal. The house was filled with laughter and the smell of home-cooked food. Mrs. Lane and Maisie had gone out of their way to make all of Larry’s favorite dishes. He’d eaten plenty of fancy meals in his life, but tonight, surrounded by warmth and the sound of happy voices, he realized how much he’d missed the comfort of a real family dinner.
They were all talking and joking when Mr. Adams walked in. The room fell silent in an instant.
Larry looked up, caught off guard. The easy smile disappeared from his face. He hadn’t expected to see his grandfather here, not like this.
His eyes turned cold. “Why are you here?” His voice was calm but distant, nothing like the way he used to speak to him. Whatever closeness they once had was gone, replaced by a cool politeness, as if Mr. Adams were nothing more than a stranger. The happy, relaxed Larry from a moment ago had vanished.
