Whether he took the offer or not, that was something Larry Adams had to decide for himself. Mr. and Mrs. Lane kept quiet, both of them determined not to interfere with their grandson’s choice.
Larry took a steady breath and faced his grandparents. “He’s already given me the shares. There’s no way I’m walking away now. I’m going back to the Adams family.”
He paused for a moment, his eyes clear. “This isn’t just a chance Dennis fought for. It’s what I want too. I’m going back to dig out the rot in the Adams family, once and for all. I want to make sure nobody else does something as cruel as Joseph Adams did. The reason the Adams family gets away with so much is because of their name and status. That’s what lets them act like they’re untouchable.”
His gaze moved across the room, landing on each worried, caring face. “And there’s another reason now. It’s not just about me anymore. Before, maybe I wouldn’t have fought so hard, but now I have you. I have a family I almost lost and finally got back. I want to get stronger, for all of you. Because only when I have real power can I protect the people I love. Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Maisie, Uncle, even Calvert and Madonna… I don’t want anyone I care about to ever be forced into the kind of pain my mom went through.”
Mr. Lane and Mrs. Lane looked at Larry, their eyes shining with tears. They hadn’t realized he was thinking about them too. Maisie felt her heart twist at his words.
Mr. Lane nodded, pride and support clear in his voice. “You’re right, Larry. You need to be strong. That’s the only way you’ll never have to be afraid, and you can protect everything that matters to you. Back then, we lost Samantha because we had no power. But you’re a lot smarter than we ever were. I believe in you. We all do. You can do this, and we’re behind you all the way.”
Maisie seemed to come around, her tone firmer now. “The Adams family owes you. Don’t let them off easy. You don’t have to be polite with them.”
Larry gave a determined nod. “I won’t.”
