“It’s obvious they did their homework on us. They came ready. We’ve found their base, but breaking in will take some time.”
The tension in the room felt heavy. Dennis looked at Aaron and asked, “How much time?”
Aaron hesitated, just for a second. “Two days.”
Dennis didn’t get angry. He just watched Aaron, his eyes cool. “Aaron, you’re slipping.”
His voice was flat, but Aaron had been around him long enough to know what that meant. Mr. Williams was absolutely not happy with how things were going. Aaron felt sweat prickle at his hairline. He quickly corrected himself. “I’ll have results by tomorrow.”
“Good. I believe you.” Dennis’s tone eased, just a little, like he was finally a bit satisfied.
Aaron didn’t dare waste another second. He left the study and took his team to push deeper into the enemy’s territory.
Dennis left the study too, heading back to Camila. She was still asleep, but it wasn’t a peaceful rest. Even in her dreams, her brows were drawn together in worry. Dennis reached out, gently smoothing the crease between her eyebrows with his thumb. Then he pulled her close, his voice soft. “Don’t be scared, Camila. I’m here. I’ll protect you. Nothing bad will ever happen to you again.”
He couldn’t stand the thought of losing her, not even for a moment. Maybe it was his warmth, or the quiet promise in his words, but Camila slowly relaxed. Her face softened and she drifted into deeper sleep.
