Rows of plane trees with golden leaves lined both sides of the road, bathing everything in a gentle, romantic glow. The car rolled on for a few more minutes until a sprawling man-made lake came into view. Along its edge stood a cluster of impressive villas, all done up in grand European style.
Once the car stopped, the Byrons welcomed Dennis and Camila inside for a tour. Mr. Byron couldn’t hide his pride. “I designed this whole estate myself. Every detail has my personal touch. I even borrowed some ideas from your Estonian culture. See that pavilion by the lake? It’s inspired by your traditional architecture. There are even a few landscape paintings inside that I picked out myself.”
Dennis didn’t comment, but when he spotted the pavilion, his expression turned complicated. “Your taste… could really use some work.”
The sight of an old-fashioned pavilion thrown next to these fancy European villas was just plain odd. Camila couldn’t help but wonder what kind of taste Mr. Byron actually had to mix the two together.
Mr. Byron bristled right away. “You’re just jealous. Talent like mine can’t be copied. If you don’t believe it, let’s settle this at the shooting range.”
“Sure,” Dennis replied, not missing a beat.
Camila couldn’t remember much from her past, but hearing them talk, she suddenly pictured Dennis in a special forces uniform, handling a gun with perfect skill. Had she seen that before? Somehow, she just knew Dennis wouldn’t lose.
And she was right.
They squared off at the shooting range, and Dennis moved with effortless precision. Every shot hit the mark. His eyes were sharp, his movements crisp, every action smooth and professional.
