Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1067

Mr. Byron was nothing if not quick to react. Dennis Williams picked up on the same thing. In the world they lived in, there were A-level organizations, then S, double S, and, at the very top, triple S. Normally, only the most elite would even think of making a move against Dennis. Sending some low-level nobody? It felt like an insult. Did they think he was rusty just because he’d kept a low profile for a while? Did they really believe he couldn’t handle himself anymore?

Dennis found himself glancing toward the greenhouse, where Camila was standing. He hoped he was wrong about what was coming. If someone really was after Camila, he’d make sure they paid the price, no matter what it took.

Around noon, the Byrons invited Dennis and Camila out for lunch. The meal was extravagant, and everyone seemed relaxed, laughter flowing easily around the table. When they finished eating, Mr. Byron offered—insisted, really—that they come stay at his place for a while.

“It’s getting messy out there, and nobody’s figured out what’s going on yet. My place is safer,” Mr. Byron said, making it sound like a done deal. “Apex isn’t the capital, but it’s still my territory. Security’s tight. No one’s getting in if I don’t want them to.”

Vivien squeezed Camila’s hand. “And honestly, I could use some parenting tips from you.”

Camila looked at Dennis, not sure what to say. She always let him handle decisions like this.

Dennis paused for a second or two. “We appreciate it. I just don’t want to bring you any trouble…”

Mr. Byron waved him off, clearly not having it. “Come on, Dennis. You think I’m scared of a little trouble? Don’t sell me short.”

Dennis knew there was no changing his mind. When Mr. Byron decided on something, that was it. He finally agreed, giving in with a small nod. “Alright, we’ll do it your way. But if you’re hoping for parenting advice, Camila might not be the best person for that.”

He added with a half-smile, “I’ve actually been the one teaching our daughter most things.”

Dennis didn’t mention Camila’s memory issues. There was no need to bring it up.
