Mr. Byron gave a serious nod. “Yeah, it’s them. When they were in Avalor, they did some terrible things. We’re talking hundreds of innocent old people and kids, all gone because of them. The whole city was in an uproar and they ended up on the most-wanted list. But they’re clever. They managed to dodge the police and skip town, setting up in a new country. I’ll give them that much. They didn’t waste time, either. Pretty soon, they’d built their own criminal operation…”
Dennis didn’t have to ask where they went. He shot Mr. Byron a look. “So what are the Kaston authorities even doing? How do you let a group like that get so big? Why not take them out?”
Mr. Byron looked helpless. “How could we have known? I already said they’re crafty. After Avalor put them on the wanted list, they got super cautious. When they first got to Kaston, they kept their heads down, working in the shadows. By the time we caught on, they’d already dug in deep. The police have been investigating for two years now, but you know how it is. An organization this big always has people helping them out from the inside. More than once, right before we were about to make a move, they somehow found out and disappeared. Every plan gets blocked…”
He sounded truly frustrated. Mr. Byron had always fought for justice, so having his own people slow him down was enough to make anyone angry.
He glanced at Dennis. “Are you planning to go after them?”
Dennis’s voice was calm. “Yeah. No one messes with me and gets away with it.”
Of course, it wasn’t just about that night’s car chase. Dennis also wanted to send a warning to whoever was pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Mr. Byron’s eyes lit up. “If you’re getting involved, we might finally see some results. Honestly, I could use a win right now. What do you say we team up?”
Dennis raised an eyebrow, not quite agreeing or disagreeing. “I’m only after their top people. The rest isn’t my problem.”
