When Camila walked into the nursery with Vivien, she couldn’t help but stare. The room was already packed with baby stuff, every corner filled with tiny clothes, plush toys, and other adorable things. It was obvious how much Vivien and Mr. Byron were looking forward to their baby.
Vivien grinned at her. “Mr. Byron put all of this together way too early, but honestly, I don’t trust his taste at all. I’m so glad you’re here to help me sort it out.”
Camila thought about Mr. Byron’s unusual sense of style. “He definitely has his own vibe, but you can tell how much he cares. He’s put so much thought into everything for the baby.”
Even though Mr. Byron always said he wanted a daughter, everything in the nursery was clearly picked out for a little boy. Nothing was missing, not a single detail.
Vivien smiled, her eyes soft. “Yeah, I noticed that too. Alright, let’s get started.”
“Sure,” Camila replied, and they began unpacking. Out came tiny shirts, miniature bottles, soft little animals, a stroller, a crib… Everything was so small and cute, it made Camila’s heart ache a little. She wondered if she’d felt this excited when she was preparing for Lillian’s arrival.
“Camila, do you think we should put these stuffed animals in the crib?” Vivien turned around, her arms full of plushies. She wasn’t watching her step and suddenly tripped over something on the floor, losing her balance.
“Watch out!”
Camila’s heart dropped. She rushed forward, but it was too late. Vivien fell, her baby bump knocking hard against the side of the stroller. The pain hit instantly, sharp and overwhelming, and tears sprang to Vivien’s eyes.
“It hurts… oh, it hurts…” she gasped, curled up on the floor.
