Camila’s gut twisted as she realized she’d just walked into a trap. She didn’t even have a chance to shout or run. Everything went black and she crumpled to the floor.
A little while later, the door opened again. Someone in a nurse’s uniform came in, moving quickly and quietly. Only a few minutes passed before the nurse pushed a cart out of the room, walking right by Vivien’s door without even pausing.
The bodyguards outside Vivien’s room started to feel uneasy when Camila didn’t come back. After waiting a bit longer, one of them decided to check the room she’d gone into. He pushed open the door and found it empty. Camila was gone. Even the old woman who’d been there was nowhere to be seen.
“Mrs. Smith is missing!” he gasped, panic growing in his chest.
“How is that even possible?”
The noise reached Vivien in her room. She sat up, alarmed, and tried to get out of bed. “What do you mean, Camila’s missing?”
The butler rushed over and gently stopped her. “Mrs. Smith, you can’t get up right now. Let me go see what’s going on. Please, just rest.”
His words made Vivien remember the baby. She pressed a hand to her stomach and sank back onto the bed, suddenly afraid to move.
The butler hurried out to talk to the bodyguards. They were already piecing things together. “That old woman was probably a disguise,” one guard said, face pale. “Camila must have been knocked out. Someone else, dressed as a nurse, took her away…”
“Send people after them, now,” the butler ordered. “I’ll make sure they lock down the parking garage exits.”
