SilverFox blurted out, “You caught her?”
Both of them just stood there, totally lost. Neither of them had grabbed this woman.
A short distance away, Dennis Williams watched them, his eyes cold and shadowed. The way he carried himself, icy and dangerous, made the air feel heavy and thick, like even breathing was a challenge. Even though he wasn’t right next to them, BlackScorpion and SilverWolf could feel the threat rolling off him, something dark and deadly that seemed to seep right into their bones. It was the kind of killing intent that made you wonder if you’d make it out alive. They’d been assassins for years, seen some scary people, but no one had ever made them this afraid.
Their legs were shaking and it took everything just to stay standing.
SilverFox turned to BlackScorpion, voice wavering. “BlackScorpion, who is this guy?”
BlackScorpion was scrambling to remember if he’d ever seen Dennis Williams before, but came up empty. Nothing. Not even a hint of recognition.
Their fear was real, and the urge to survive kicked their brains into overdrive. They’d never thought this fast in their lives. When Dennis lifted his hand, looking like he’d give the order to attack again, BlackScorpion practically shouted, “Wait! We don’t have her, but RedFox might be the one on this job! Just give us a little time, let us check! The three of us handle different things, maybe the person you’re after is with RedFox!”
That was the only explanation BlackScorpion could come up with. If RedFox didn’t have her either, then they were as good as dead. With someone like Dennis staring them down and nowhere to run, there was nothing they could do.
Mr. Byron didn’t have any patience left. “Stop stalling. I’m giving you three minutes. If you don’t have an answer, you’re finished.”
BlackScorpion and SilverWolf turned pale and scrambled to call RedFox. The phone rang and rang, no answer. Sweat started to drip down their faces. They could feel Dennis’s group watching them, waiting. Thinking fast, BlackScorpion called RedFox’s right-hand man instead.
This time, someone picked up. Both brothers let out a shaky breath.
“BlackScorpion? What’s up?” RedFox’s guy sounded confused.
“Has RedFox grabbed anyone from Venus Hospital in the past couple days?” BlackScorpion’s words tumbled out. “Is she okay? Did anything happen to her?”
The guy on the other end paused, thrown off. How did BlackScorpion know about that? “Yeah, we did take someone. As for what happened… what do you mean exactly?”
Hearing that, BlackScorpion and SilverWolf almost collapsed. “What do you mean, ‘what do you mean’? Did RedFox do anything else to her?”
Across the way, Dennis Williams’s presence grew even scarier. He stared at the two brothers like he was already planning their funeral.
Sweat poured down BlackScorpion’s face. He gritted his teeth and pressed, “Is she still alive?”
“She’s alive! Of course, she’s alive!” the guy said quickly.
BlackScorpion felt like he could breathe again, but only barely. He snapped, “Listen to me, don’t touch her. Not even a scratch, you hear me? If anything happens to her, you’re all done for.”
