Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1124

“This is just one of my many roles,” Professor Keri said, his voice calm and measured.

Sammy nodded, not pushing for details. He cut right to the chase instead. “Let’s not drag things out, Professor Keri. Why don’t we get straight to business?”

Keri nodded in agreement. “Of course. Whatever my guest prefers.”

He motioned for Sammy to sit with him. They were just about to start the real conversation when one of Keri’s men came rushing in, nearly tripping over himself.

Keri’s brows drew together in irritation, clearly displeased by the interruption. The man didn’t waste time apologizing, though. He hurried over and whispered something urgently in Keri’s ear.

Sammy watched with curiosity but kept quiet. Keri’s expression barely changed, but for a split second, his eyes turned sharp and cold. He waved his man away, then turned back to Sammy.

“Is something wrong, Professor Keri?” Sammy asked, trying to sound casual.

Keri didn’t answer right away. Instead, he gave a brief smile. “Sorry, something’s come up on my end. I’ll need to step away for a moment. Please wait here, and we’ll pick up where we left off as soon as I’m back.”

Without another word, Keri stood and headed for the door. Sammy caught the flash of something fierce in his eyes, a hint of steel beneath the smooth exterior. As Keri crossed the doorway, there was a sudden burst of footsteps outside, followed by the sharp, relentless rattle of gunfire tearing through the entrance.

Sammy didn’t sit there like bait. The instant the shooting started, he sprang into action, diving behind a thick column for cover. The church was filled with pews, statues, and sturdy pillars that made decent hiding spots.

He had no idea what was really happening. All his belongings had been taken before he came in, so he was unarmed. If they were after him, he was in real danger. Even so, Sammy kept his cool.

During a pause in the gunfire, he grabbed the bible lying beside him and hurled it at a candelabra. The candles crashed to the ground, snuffing out the light and plunging the church into darkness. He quickly pressed a hidden button under the pew. A moment later, the crackling boom of fireworks exploded outside, echoing through the night.

Professor Keri didn’t see any of this. He was already on the move with Sampson, hurrying out while keeping an eye out for danger. “How did you know something was off with this deal?” Keri asked urgently.
