Dennis ran his hand gently over the little girl’s hair and said to her grandparents, “I will. I’ll wait for her.” He didn’t tell them how much the G-1 drug was hurting Camila. He was afraid the truth would be too much for them to handle.
The car made its way home. When they got out, Melissa slipped back into her world-weary mood.
After helping her upstairs, Dennis didn’t leave right away. He hung around, keeping Lillian company until night settled in. Only then, making sure they weren’t being followed, did he take Lillian to see Camila.
It was late. Normally, Lillian would have been curled up in bed by now, but tonight she was too excited. The thought of seeing her mom had her wide awake, bouncing with energy.
The whole ride, she kept asking, “Dad, are we there yet?”
“Almost,” Dennis told her, holding her close. “Just a little longer.”
Lillian did her best to wait patiently. After about ten minutes, they pulled up outside a villa. Dennis took her hand and led her inside.
Camila had gotten Dennis’s text, and she’d been waiting for them, barely able to sit still. The moment she heard the front door open, she jumped to her feet to greet them.
“Lillian!”
“Mommy!” Lillian’s whole face lit up. She let go of Dennis’s hand and ran straight into Camila’s arms, hugging her tight.
“I missed you so much, Mommy. It’s been forever since I saw you!”
Camila hugged her back, just as tightly. The two of them snuggled together, and Camila ruffled her daughter’s hair. “It hasn’t even been that long, but I feel like you’ve grown taller, Lillian.”
Dennis watched them, his eyes soft. “I thought so too.”
Lillian beamed with pride. “I ate lots and lots every day when you weren’t here!”
Camila grinned and kissed her on the cheek. “I knew you’d be good for me, sweetheart.”
The two of them cuddled for a while, but soon Lillian started yawning. No matter how excited she was, she was still a little kid and staying up this late was hard work.
Camila got ready to take her to bed, thinking Lillian would want to sleep with her tonight. But Lillian surprised her for the first time all evening.
Clutching her little fox plushie, Lillian said, “I want to sleep by myself tonight!”
Camila blinked in surprise. “Why? Don’t you want to sleep with Mommy?”
“I do,” Lillian said in her tiny voice, “but I don’t want to bother you and Daddy.”
