Dennis looked distant, his eyes clouded with something heavy. He still seemed down, like he hadn't shaken off whatever was weighing on him.
After listening to Cynthia, he turned to his sister and said, “Take it easy and focus on getting better. Don’t worry about anything else. You don’t need to go to The Smith Group for now. I’ll have someone else fill in for you.”
Audrey didn’t argue. She knew her health had already made her family anxious, so she just nodded. “Okay, I’ll do what you say, big brother.”
Dennis didn’t rush out. He stayed and chatted with her for a bit, but anyone could see his heart wasn’t really in it. Not long after Audrey finished lunch, he got up and left.
Seeing this, Cynthia couldn’t help but feel disappointed. She’d waited all night to see him, but when he finally showed up, it was like she didn’t exist. He didn’t even say hello. Even when she tried to talk about Audrey’s condition, he just kept that distant look on his face. When he left, he didn’t so much as glance her way. She might as well have been invisible.
How could things be like this? If he kept ignoring her, how was she ever supposed to get closer to him?
Cynthia felt a wave of frustration, but she forced herself to stay calm. Audrey was his only sister. If she stuck around and kept taking care of Audrey, Dennis was bound to notice her eventually. She told herself to just keep being there, to let him get used to having her around. That was the only way to slowly close the distance between them.
While Cynthia was trying to reassure herself, Audrey let out a sigh, looking at the closed door, worry written all over her face.
Cynthia picked up on it right away and asked, “Audrey, what’s wrong?”
