That look in his eyes made Sarah’s heart drop to her stomach. For a second, she wanted to bolt, but stubborn pride—and a pinch of common sense—kept her rooted to the spot.
She tried to laugh it off. “Billy… what are you doing here? This is so out of the blue. You couldn’t have texted first? Popping up like this is, uh, kind of a lot.”
Her words sounded shaky even to her own ears. She was already scrambling for a way to get him to leave before things got any messier.
Billy just stared at her, his face unreadable, his voice low and heavy. “What did you just say?”
Sarah rushed to cover. “Nothing! I just meant… what a surprise to see you. It’s been forever since we’ve seen each other. How did you know I missed you?”
Billy wasn’t buying it. His eyes stayed icy as he asked, “Sarah Brown, do you think this would hold up? Strong enough… to break someone’s bones?”
He spoke slowly, every word pressed down like a warning.
Sarah flinched, then dropped to her knees like it was second nature. “Billy, please don’t break his legs. This is all my fault—really! I took advantage of him when he was down, and when he was drunk, I couldn’t help myself. But I’m not playing around, I swear. I’ll take responsibility. I’ll date him—seriously, with marriage and everything! Just… please, let him go.”
She tried to shield the bedroom door, desperate to keep her brother from charging in and beating Larry senseless.
Billy’s mood seemed to darken even more.
He glanced at Larry, who was leaning against the doorframe, making no move to hide. Larry had been drunk last night, but not so far gone that he didn’t remember. He knew exactly what had happened, and that he’d gone along with it because he wanted to—not just because of the alcohol.
