Larry Adams spotted her heading for the door and tried to stop her. But Sarah Brown was already out, curiosity pulling her into the hallway to check on the noise.
The second she saw the tall, intimidating figure at her dining table, her heart nearly stopped. She froze, then blurted out, “Oh my god!” before slamming the door shut with a loud bang, just as the man started to look her way.
Sarah pressed her palms to her cheeks. She had to be dreaming. There was no way she was seeing her brother here, in her own apartment. Maybe she’d opened the door wrong or something. That had to be it.
She took a steadying breath, cracked the door open just enough to peek out, and this time her anxious eyes landed right on Billy Brown’s cold, sharp stare.
He didn’t look angry. If anything, he looked bored. But Sarah could feel the threat hanging in the air, cold as ice.
Billy glanced at his watch, then spoke, his voice low and dangerous. “You have ten minutes to get yourself together and come out. If you’re not out here by then, I’ll be visiting your grave this time next year.”
Sarah slammed the door shut again, her face a mix of shock and panic. “I’m dead. I am so dead.”
She couldn’t believe it. Her brother was actually back. He’d picked today, of all days. And worse, it looked like he’d walked in on her and Larry Adams at exactly the wrong moment.
For a split second, Sarah considered making a break for the window and escaping off the balcony. But then reality hit her. She lived on a high floor. One wrong move and she’d be gone for good.
Larry, watching her weird behavior and panicked face, started to worry. He stood up. “Who’s out there? What’s going on?”
Sarah turned toward him, looking utterly miserable. “It’s Billy.”
