Cynthia could hardly contain her excitement. There was no way she could dwell on old grudges now. She offered Charlotte a warm, genuine smile. “Of course not, Charlotte. I never took any of that to heart, honestly. I’d never hold anything against you or Audrey. I should be thanking you both, really. No one wanted what happened, but now that it has, we just have to deal with it together. I’m so grateful you’re willing to give me this chance and support how I feel about Dennis.”

Charlotte gave her a look full of mixed emotions. “You really are a sweet girl. I just don’t know why we ever listened to Dennis in the first place…” There was a trace of regret in her voice.

Audrey, never one for dragging things out, made the call. “Alright, let’s do this. I’ll have my brother come over for lunch. Cynthia, you should take the chance to talk with him some more.”

Cynthia nodded right away. “Sounds good.”

Audrey pulled out her phone, but when she pressed the power button, nothing happened. She frowned. “Oh, shoot, I was playing on it earlier and totally drained the battery. Mom, can I borrow yours?”

Charlotte dug through her bag, searching every pocket. “Oh no, I must have left it at home. I was making soup for you earlier, put my phone down by the thermos, and completely forgot to grab it.”

Audrey looked around helplessly. “Now what?” Her eyes landed on Cynthia. “Cynthia, looks like I’ll need to borrow your phone.”

“No problem, go ahead.” Cynthia passed her phone over, but she kept a close eye on the screen, obviously hoping Audrey wouldn’t accidentally open the wrong thing.

Audrey didn’t snoop. She just opened the dialer and called her brother.

Dennis picked up almost right away, but his voice was kind of cold. “What’s up?”

Audrey’s tone was relaxed. “Hey, it’s me. My phone’s dead, so I’m calling from Cynthia’s. I was just going to ask if you could bring over some of that dumpling soup from the place near The Smith Group. Can you bring two orders at lunch?”

When Dennis realized it was Audrey, he sounded a little softer. “Alright. Anything else you want? Tell me now, I’ll grab it all at once.”

“Yeah! I want those little cakes from that chain downtown, and some strawberries too…”

She rattled off a whole list. Dennis just said yes to everything, then hung up.
