Camila Davis froze for a second, caught completely off guard.
She never expected Dennis Williams to ask her that.
After all, they’d barely exchanged more than a handful of words tonight. How on earth did he notice she was in a bad mood?
“How… how could you tell?” Camila couldn’t help but ask, curiosity getting the better of her.
Dennis shrugged, his tone relaxed, “When we FaceTimed earlier, you had this shadow over your eyes. It’s hard to miss if you’re paying attention. Did something happen? If there’s anything I can help with, just let me know.”
Oh. That made sense.
She thought she’d hidden it well enough. Apparently not—at least, not from him.
But then again, Mr. Williams was a psychologist. Picking up on people’s feelings and thoughts was kind of his thing. She probably shouldn’t be surprised.
As for the trouble tonight… She hesitated, not willing to go into the messy details.
For reasons she couldn’t quite explain, Camila didn’t want Dennis getting involved in her drama with the Smiths and the Taylors. She didn’t want to drag him into that mud.
“It’s nothing, really. The Smith Corporation’s got some issues, but I can handle it. Should be sorted out in a day or two, tops,” she said, trying to sound breezy.
Dennis clearly heard the subtext, but he didn’t push. “Alright then. No need to let little things ruin your night.”
Camila smiled, genuinely this time. “Honestly, after watching those amazing fireworks, I couldn’t stay upset if I tried. I’m in a great mood now—thanks, Mr. Williams!”
This New Year’s felt different for her. She’d finally left behind a terrible marriage, was getting her life and career back on track, and Lillian, her daughter, was making real progress with her autism.
Putting aside Sandra Taylor and Jordan Smith’s nonsense, there were plenty of good things to count.
Especially meeting Dennis Williams.
Maybe it was the sensational headline, but people clicked in droves.
What they found was explosive.
Turns out, for years The Taylor Group had been dodging taxes, sneaking faulty products onto the market, and cutting corners with cheap materials.
A few years back, while developing a lakeside resort, they’d run local families off the land using illegal tactics—and one elderly farmer ended up paralyzed from the waist down. The man had no family, and survived only on handouts from neighbors and government assistance.
Worse, when The Taylor Group organized a charity fundraiser a few years ago, all the money mysteriously ended up lining their own pockets.
Each accusation came with evidence attached, and the internet exploded with outrage.
It was the holidays—people had time to kill, and this was the juiciest gossip of the new year.
Tax evasion, hurting innocent people, and stealing from charity—these were things no decent person could forgive.
