Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 349

Dennis Williams glanced over his shoulder just in time to see Camila Davis wrestling with her shoe. She’d managed to wedge the heel into a crack in the hardwood floor, and no amount of tugging seemed to help. After a few futile yanks, she was starting to get frustrated.

It looked like she was having an invisible tug-of-war with the floor itself. Muttering under her breath, she grumbled, “Oh, come on, don’t hold onto me…”

Aaron, trailing behind, couldn’t help himself. He snorted with laughter.

Aaron had known Ms. Davis for ages and was used to her calm, put-together demeanor. Seeing her now, acting more like a kid stuck in a playground than a composed professional, was a sight to behold.

His laugh was so loud that Camila paused, shot him a glare, and huffed, “What’s so funny? Don’t laugh at me!”

The mock annoyance in her eyes made Aaron almost certain she’d throw her other shoe at him if he didn’t stop.

He stifled his laughter and quickly put on an apologetic face. “Okay, okay, I’m done, I promise. Not another word.”

Camila gave him a final, suspicious look before focusing back on her stuck shoe.

Dennis, watching the whole scene unfold, couldn’t hide his amusement either. He walked over and offered gently, “Here, let me take a look.”

Camila’s eyes lit up hopefully.

Dennis said, “Try slipping your foot out first. Maybe we can just pull the shoe out by hand.”

“Alright.” Camila obliged, slipping her foot free and awkwardly planting her toes on the cool floor.

Dennis crouched down, about to grab the shoe, but Aaron jumped in, eager to help. “Mr. Williams, let me do it. You just help Ms. Davis stay steady.”

Before Dennis could protest, Aaron had already knelt down and grabbed the shoe. He gave it one sharp yank—too sharp.

There was a loud crack.

Aaron froze. The heel had snapped clean off.

He looked up at Camila, guilt written all over his face. “Uh… Ms. Davis, I, uh… I think your shoe’s had it.”

Dennis shot Aaron a look. “Really, Aaron? You couldn’t have been a little gentler?”

Aaron threw his hands up defensively. “I swear, Mr. Williams, I didn’t think the heel was gonna just… break off like that.”

He wondered, not for the first time, how expensive women’s shoes could be—and whether he was about to owe Camila a brand-new pair.

Camila stared at her ruined shoe for a long moment, the awkward silence stretching. At last, she shrugged, forcing a smile. “It’s fine. I’ll just go barefoot.”

As they exited, Jordan’s eyes landed on Camila—being carried away by a tall man.

His expression darkened instantly, jealousy and anger flaring in his eyes.

Who the hell is that with Camila? And what’s going on between them?

He didn’t get a clear look at Dennis’s face, but one thing was certain—that definitely wasn’t Walter Wilson.

The realization made his jaw clench. They’d barely been divorced a hot minute, and already Camila was cozying up to someone new in public. Shameless, he thought, fuming.

Sandra noticed him stop dead and shot him a puzzled look. “Jordan? What’s wrong?”

He pulled his eyes away, his voice suddenly cold. “Nothing.”

With that, he strode off toward the parking lot.

Sandra hurried after him, thinking he was still steamed about what happened at the banquet. Softening her tone, she tried to placate him. “I’m sorry, Jordan. I had no idea Walter Wilson would be like that tonight. The way he singled me out in front of everyone… he clearly just wanted to humiliate me. Please don’t be mad at me, okay?”
