Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 421

Camila Davis’s ears were burning bright red—she was so embarrassed, she couldn’t get her words out fast enough. “N-no, really, that’s fine, thank you… Uh, goodbye, Mr. Williams…”

She was terrified that if she hesitated even a second longer, Lillian would blurt out something mortifying again. Not waiting for a reaction from the other side, Camila hung up the video call in a panic.

As she tucked her phone away, Sarah Brown was beside her, laughing so hard she almost dropped the toddler in her lap. “Oh my god, Lillian, you are just too adorable!” she cackled, giving the little one a big squeeze.

Lillian, oblivious to what was happening, just saw Sarah’s big smile and started giggling too.

Camila felt a headache coming on. Her little girl had been taking full advantage of Mr. Williams’s kindness ever since she got sick, leaving Camila so embarrassed she wanted to crawl under the couch. How was she ever supposed to face Mr. Williams again?

Lillian, of course, had no clue she’d done anything wrong. At least she was finally calm enough to nap.

On the other side of town, Dennis Williams put away his phone, still picturing Camila’s flushed, mortified face before she hung up. He couldn’t help the small, amused smile that flickered across his lips.

Just then, Aaron came striding in, looking more serious than usual. “Mr. Williams.”

Dennis straightened, the smile fading. It was clear Aaron had news. “What is it? Go ahead.”

Aaron didn’t beat around the bush. “Sir, we’ve got feedback from our team in Savannah. It’s about the Thompson family case—there’s been some progress with what happened all those years ago.”

Dennis’s eyes darkened. “Does it match what I suspected?”

Aaron let out a tense breath and nodded. “Turns out, Mr. Thompson’s marriage to his wife’s mother wasn’t a whirlwind romance. In fact, Mr. Thompson forced her to… well, have his child.”

Her name was Samantha Lane—a real beauty back in her day, from a once-prominent but now faded academic family.

“She actually had a boyfriend, someone she loved deeply. They planned to get married. But Mr. Thompson used some pretty dirty tricks to break them up. Once Samantha got pregnant, she basically had no choice but to marry into the Thompson family for her family’s reputation.”

“After the wedding, things were miserable. Mr. Thompson was constantly cheating, even while Samantha was pregnant, and that’s when he met his current wife. You know the rest—Samantha died, and suddenly everyone’s whispering that she tried to steal someone else’s husband or even murder the new Mrs. Thompson, and in the end, she drowned in the river…”
