Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 451

Camila Davis hesitated, her voice uncertain.

She never did tell Dennis Williams the real reason. They weren’t close enough for her to pry, and she knew it.

After a few seconds, she finally spoke. “No, nothing. I just wanted to try, see if I could help her get back on track. You know… just in case you ever head back to Cabinda and can’t see her anymore, at least she’d be prepared for it.”

Dennis had a nagging feeling there was more to it than that.

Camila wasn’t the impulsive type. She always had her own reasons for doing things. There had to be something else going on.

But if Camila didn’t want to share, Dennis wasn’t about to push her.

His tone softened. “Don’t worry. I’m not going back anytime soon. Even if I do, I’ll make sure to handle this before I leave. Lillian’s situation is delicate. She needs gentle, step-by-step guidance—not anything too abrupt. If you’re too direct, it might only make her anxious or unsettled.”

“It’s that serious?” Camila tensed up, then quickly apologized. “Sorry, I really didn’t handle things well this morning. I’ll be more careful next time.”

Regret crept in. Lillian was already in a tough spot. If her misguided attempt backfired, she’d never forgive herself.

Dennis’s voice was warm. “It’s alright, I’m not blaming you. Just letting you know. If you ever need anything, you can always come to me.”

It was a gentle nudge, but Camila stubbornly kept her silence.

“Okay, got it,” she replied, still not mentioning the text message.

Dennis didn’t push. He switched topics instead. “By the way, you’ve got a delivery coming later. Be sure to sign for it.”

“Huh?” Camila sounded confused. “What is it?”

Dennis only chuckled. “You’ll see when it arrives.”

Alright then. Camila didn’t ask further.

Once the call ended, she went back to work.

Later that afternoon, Mary knocked on her office door, holding a beautifully wrapped bouquet of flowers.

Camila blinked in surprise. “Who are those from?”

Mary grinned. “The flower shop dropped them off for you. I just carried them in.” She raised an eyebrow, teasing, “Is Ms. Davis getting flowers from a secret admirer?”

Camila froze, mind racing. Dennis had told her to expect a delivery… was this it? Did he send her flowers?

She eyed the pale pink and white roses, unable to quite believe it.

She asked Mary, “Anything else? No delivery slip to sign?”

Mary looked puzzled, then shook her head. “No, just the flowers.”

Camila nodded, saying nothing more.

So they really were from Dennis. But what did this mean?

Her feelings were all over the place. Was she upset? Not really. Just… weird. She couldn’t put her finger on it.

She decided not to overthink it.

She replied quickly: “Yeah, the flowers are beautiful. Definitely makes my day brighter.”

Dennis: “Glad to hear it.”

After that, the conversation trailed off. They both went back to their respective work.

Camila headed to the lab to work on a new medication. She even took some time that afternoon to prepare a new batch of Dennis’s sleep aid.

The rare herbs she’d sourced last weekend had been delivered by Dennis’s security detail to the lab, and she didn’t want them to go to waste.

Meanwhile, Dennis got a call from Mr. Morris.

Cynthia Lee had flown back to Cabinda alone, and Mr. Morris was not happy.

As soon as Dennis picked up, he was met with a lecture. “How could you treat a young lady like that? So cold, so distant—honestly, it’s just not right!”

Dennis barely batted an eye. “As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been perfectly polite to Ms. Lee. I haven’t neglected her.”

Mr. Morris huffed. “You’re being too polite. It comes across as cold. She’s meant to be your fiancée, not just any acquaintance!”

Dennis decided it was time to be clear once and for all. “Mr. Morris, maybe I haven’t been direct enough before, but let me set the record straight this time…”
