Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 450

She looked a little confused, hurrying over to say, “Ms. Davis, it’s late and chilly outside. You shouldn’t be out on the porch in this weather—you’ll catch a cold again!”

Susan’s voice snapped Camila Davis out of her wandering thoughts.

She turned back, managing a small smile. “You’re right, Susan. I’ll head to bed now.”

Susan gave her a second glance, concern shadowing her features.

Something was off tonight—Ms. Davis seemed restless, troubled by something she wasn’t saying.

Before Susan could press further, Camila had already left the balcony and disappeared into her bedroom.

Lying in bed, Camila tried her best to forget what she’d seen that evening, to convince herself it didn’t matter. But the more she tried, the clearer those memories became.

She tossed and turned most of the night, unable to find peace. She couldn’t even remember when she finally drifted off, but her sleep was far from restful.

The next morning, Camila was up early, her mind still preoccupied with everything that had happened the night before.

She kept replaying it in her head, thinking: If what I heard last night is true, should I try to make sure Lillian doesn’t call Mr. Williams “Daddy” anymore?

If Dennis already has someone he cares about, it would be terrible to cause any misunderstandings because of me and Lillian…

After breakfast, Camila bundled Lillian into her coat and walked her to school. On the way, she tried to gently explain why she shouldn’t call Dennis “Daddy” for now.

Lillian looked up at her with wide, confused eyes. “But why, Mom?”

Truthfully, Camila hadn’t really thought this through—it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and now she was struggling to find a good explanation. By the time they reached the preschool gates, she still hadn’t managed to come up with anything convincing.

She couldn’t exactly tell her little girl, “Sweetie, your ‘Daddy’ might have a new girlfriend.”

Lillian had already had a rough time recently—she’d just been teased by Jordan Smith and Sandra Taylor about her family. The last thing Camila wanted was to give her another reason to feel hurt or left out.

Forget it. Camila let out a sigh and gave up for now, watching as Lillian skipped inside before she turned away, deep in thought.

Meanwhile, Lillian was still puzzling over her mom’s words as she entered her classroom. Why can’t I call him Daddy anymore? she wondered. She didn’t understand, but she was determined to find out.

She tugged at her teacher’s sleeve—Mr. Adams, a gentle man with an easy smile—and asked earnestly, “Mr. Adams, did my mommy and Daddy have a fight?”

“Uh—what?” Mr. Adams blinked, caught off guard. “Why do you ask that, Lillian?”

Lillian struggled to explain, so she just repeated what her mom had told her on the way to school.

“Did Daddy make Mommy mad? Why can’t I call him Daddy anymore?”
