Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 490

"Oh honey, my dear Lillian, you really are something else. Grandpa can eat by himself, you know?"

"Good job! Grandpa’s being so brave. Eat up, and all the pain will just fly away—one more bite for me..."

With Lillian coaxing him like that, Mr. Morris had no choice. He took another couple of bites, her big blue eyes watching him closely.

Every time he took a bite, she cheered, “Way to go, Grandpa! Lillian’s got a candy for you!”

Mr. Morris couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling his mood lift despite everything.

Later that day, Walter Wilson showed up at the hospital with a bouquet of fresh daisies. He didn’t bring up anything else, just told Mr. Morris to focus on getting better.

After Walter, a steady stream of visitors trickled in. Most of the guests who’d been at Camila Davis’s birthday party couldn’t make it in person, but they all sent someone to check in on Mr. Morris and wish him well.

Everyone trusted his character and made it clear they’d make sure justice was served for what happened.

Mr. Morris handled each guest with his usual grace.

By the time the last visitor left, it was almost ten o’clock at night. Mr. Morris slumped back on the hospital bed and, for once, let himself grumble to Camila Davis: “Honestly, this hospital stay is more exhausting than my old job.”

Camila laughed, sitting at his side. “Everyone’s worried about you, that’s all. They could see you were getting tired. I doubt anyone else will come tomorrow, so you can rest up tonight.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

He knew his own body well enough to realize he needed the rest. He turned to Camila. “It’s late, Camila. You’ve had a long day, and Lillian’s already yawning. Take her home and get some sleep.”

Camila shook her head firmly. “Not a chance. I’m not leaving you here alone. I’m staying with you tonight, no matter what you say!”

Mr. Morris threw up his hands in mock surrender. “What are you going to do here, really? Patrick’s still around.”

But Camila ignored him, still shaken by the day’s events. When she’d heard her mentor had been hurt, she’d been scared out of her mind, blaming herself for not being at his side.

There was no way she’d leave now. She was determined to take care of him herself.

Patrick, understanding her feelings, smiled and said, “It’s good to see you care so much, Ms. Davis. Let’s not argue about it. If you’re tired, get some rest.”

Mr. Morris tried to look annoyed, but deep down, he was touched. These kids really cared about him.

“Fine, I’ll leave it to you, then. I’m going to sleep.”

“Just now,” Dennis replied. “How’s your mentor holding up?”

“He’s okay. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad—he just hit his head, so the doctors want him under observation tonight.”

Dennis nodded and gestured for her to sit down beside him.

Strangely, just being near him calmed her nerves.

As soon as she settled in, Dennis spoke. “I’ve already had people look into The Smith Group and a bunch of media contacts. Those reporters only found out where your mentor was because of an anonymous tip.”

He went on, “The tip included fake dirt on your mentor and his address, but whoever sent it covered their tracks well. The reporters themselves are all struggling at The Smith Group—most of them are on thin ice, about to lose their jobs. Whoever’s behind this used that desperation to push them into chasing the story.”

“As for the one who actually hurt Mr. Morris... The police just called. He’s claiming it was an accident, that things got chaotic and he lost control of himself, which is how Mr. Morris got pushed.”

Camila’s jaw clenched. “That’s a load of bull.”

She’d seen the security footage herself. It was clear as day—the guy had charged straight at her mentor. It was no accident.
