Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 493

Her tone was a rare mix of assertiveness and care, leaving no room for argument.

Dennis Williams had never seen this side of her before, and couldn’t help but let out a quiet chuckle. “Really, I’m fine,” he insisted.

But Camila Davis just fixed him with a serious stare. “You don’t trust my medical skills? Even if you feel better, that wound of yours isn’t healed yet. I’ve got a better first aid kit in my bag, so don’t argue.”

Seeing how stubborn she was, Dennis realized resistance was pointless. He gave a resigned sigh. “Alright, fine. Let’s check it out in the car.”

“Perfect.”

Camila clearly didn’t care much about the location.

A few moments later, the two of them slid into the back of Dennis’s car. His SUV had tinted windows—no one passing by would see a thing.

Camila sat across from him, eyes locked on his, waiting for him to show her the injury.

Dennis suddenly felt self-conscious for the first time in a long while. He hesitated for a couple of seconds, then started unbuttoning his shirt.

Before Camila could process what was happening, Dennis had already shrugged off his shirt.

The instant she saw his bare chest, Camila’s mind went blank. Her gaze landed on his broad shoulders and lean torso—muscles cut and defined in a way that could only belong on a magazine cover. He looked like he belonged on the cover of GQ, not in the backseat of an old Chevy.

For a second, the air inside the car felt almost too thin to breathe.

Camila’s head spun. Look away, she told herself—but her curiosity and concern pulled her gaze right back to him.

Her eyes settled on the wound: a harsh, red slash just below Dennis’s right shoulder blade. Another scar ran across his back, this one shallower and already starting to fade.

But the more recent one was still covered with gauze.

Camila leaned in, gently peeling back the bandage. She couldn’t suppress a sharp intake of breath when she saw the angry, half-healed wound beneath. It was the length of her palm, still red and raw.

She frowned, eyes flashing with indignation. “Dennis Williams, how can you say this isn’t serious?”

Her voice was tight with emotion.

Dennis was momentarily stunned; it was the first time he’d ever heard her use his full name—and with such heat in her tone, no less. For some reason, he didn’t mind it. In fact, he kind of liked it. The way she scolded him was almost… endearing.
