She realized, with a pang, that she knew almost nothing about him. It was like staring into a blank page.
Camila Davis drifted off, her gaze unfocused.
Sarah Brown noticed her friend zoning out and couldn’t help but ask, “Hey, do you think Mr. Williams is coming back?”
Camila blinked herself back to reality. “He probably will,” she replied, though her voice was uncertain. “But... I honestly don’t know when.”
Sarah frowned, growing anxious. “So, it’s not for sure? Does that mean he might never come back?”
She hesitated, then pressed on, “Camila, do you really not have any feelings for Mr. Williams? Not even a little?”
Camila had no idea how to answer that.
Sarah continued, “He’s from Cabinda, right? Even if he comes back to Harrisburg, it’ll probably just be a short visit. Sooner or later, he’ll have to go back home for good. Then, seeing him won’t be so easy anymore.”
Camila knew that already, deep down.
But her heart was a mess—she couldn’t figure out what she really wanted.
Sarah kept going, “I was chatting with Larry Adams the other day. He mentioned that Mr. Williams will probably move back to Cabinda permanently by the end of the year. He’s got to run the family business over there...
After that, meeting up will be... pretty much impossible. Aren’t you worried at all?”
Camila stared at her, stunned.
She’d always known Dennis Williams would return to Cabinda someday. But she hadn’t realized it was happening so soon.
That strange, hollow feeling she’d had in her chest grew a little more intense after hearing Sarah spell it all out—like she’d just missed a step on the stairs.
For a moment, Camila looked completely lost.
