Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 523

Camila Davis froze for a second, trying to wrap her head around what her boss had just said. What did he mean by that?

She almost blurted out an explanation, but before she could, Lillian popped out of nowhere, her face lighting up with excitement. “Really? We’re going to see Daddy? I wanna go too!”

The past few weeks had been a whirlwind for Camila. Mr. Morris had been sick, and she barely had a moment to herself, let alone time for anything else.

Little Lillian seemed to understand her mom was busy, so she’d been on her best behavior—no tantrums, no fuss.

Of course, she had asked a few times, “Mommy, why hasn’t Daddy come to see me?”

But Camila always found a way to dodge the question, offering vague excuses.

Meanwhile, Dennis Williams had his own troubles. His father had been injured and was recovering at home, and just as things started looking up, Dennis got called away on another assignment. He hadn’t been back since.

It had been days since Camila last heard from him.

In the chaos of life, she hadn’t had much time to dwell on it, but in those rare quiet moments, she’d find herself zoning out, remembering his promise: I’ll come back.

She just hadn’t expected “back” to take so long.

Every time they managed to text or talk, he always seemed rushed, busy, distracted. Their conversations never lasted more than a few lines.

Truth was, she barely knew anything about the man. He was a stranger wrapped up in a mystery, and it left her feeling strangely empty.

Mr. Morris could see clear as day—Lillian really adored this “Daddy.” More than she ever had her real father.

Patrick, who’d been quietly observing, finally spoke up. “Mr. Williams really filled that missing piece in Lillian’s life. He’s gone above and beyond for her. Not many people would do that, you know?”

Mr. Morris nodded. He’d only met Dennis once, and hadn’t thought much of him then. But now, with his trip to Cabinda coming up, he honestly wanted to see what kind of man Dennis Williams truly was, and what was really going on between him and Camila.

He’d never liked the idea of Camila giving up her career to marry Jordan Smith. In his mind, if a man truly loved you, he’d never expect you to give up everything for him, to be trapped at home, molding yourself into someone else just for his sake.

If Jordan had really cared for Camila, Mr. Morris wouldn’t have objected so strongly to their marriage. But the truth was, Jordan just didn’t love her enough.

Meanwhile, Lillian was still clinging to Camila’s hand, her voice growing more insistent. “Please, Mommy? It’s been forever since I saw Daddy…”
