She tugged at Camila Davis’s sleeve, barely containing her excitement. “Guess what happened to me on my way back!”

Camila raised an eyebrow at Sarah’s dramatic face, grinning. “No idea, what happened?”

Sarah made a face like she’d just swallowed a bug. She leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper, and spilled every detail of the scene she'd just stumbled into.

Camila’s eyes widened with disbelief. “You actually walked in on that? Right here? Jeez, this is a diner, for crying out loud!”

Sarah threw up her hands. “Exactly! Who does that in a place where people are trying to eat? If they’re that desperate, they should just get a motel room or something. Imagine if someone else found out? How are people supposed to enjoy their burgers with that going on?”

She glanced uneasily around their little booth, shuddering. “Ugh, I don’t think I can ever come back here.”

Her plate of fries and chicken tenders suddenly looked unappetizing.

Camila nodded in agreement. “Yeah, let’s skip this place next time.”

She wiped little Ellie’s hands, making sure her daughter was done eating, then started getting their things together to leave.

It was already past eight, and most of the other customers were finishing up. The line at the register was starting to grow.

Just as it was almost Camila’s turn to pay, a too-cheery voice piped up behind them.
