Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 551

Camila Davis fell silent for a few seconds, but in the end, she didn’t say no.

They really needed to clear the air.

If the whole “engagement” thing was real, she at least wanted him to give her a heads-up next time, instead of dropping a bomb out of nowhere.

After all, every time she made up some excuse to comfort Lillian, she was racked with guilt. The lies just kept piling up and patching over each other—it was exhausting.

As they talked, the group arrived at the restaurant.

Not long after, Sarah Brown and Larry Adams showed up.

When Sarah saw Dennis Williams, she just gave a quick hello and kept quiet—guilt written all over her face.

She was still worried about that night when she’d yelled at Dennis. What if he brought it up now? Better to lay low and not draw attention.

Luckily, Dennis didn’t seem interested in dredging up old drama.

Once everyone had settled in and ordered, Dennis slid right back into his classic “dad” role—making sure Lillian had her favorite mac and cheese and, without thinking, dishing out some for Camila too.

Whenever he peeled shrimp for Lillian, he’d make sure to slip a few onto Camila’s plate as well.

Of course Camila noticed. She tried her best to ignore his thoughtfulness—she didn’t want to fall for his soft side all over again.

She glanced over at Larry, looking for a distraction. “Feeling any better these days, Mr. Adams?” she asked.

Larry chuckled. “A lot better. Honestly, I owe you and Sarah a big thank you for the other night. Sorry you had to see me so out of it.”

He raised his glass. “Ms. Davis, Ms. Brown, this one’s for you.”

“You’re too kind, Mr. Adams.”

Camila smiled and sipped her wine, following his lead.

Sarah clinked glasses with him, too, then added, “Mr. Adams, if you’re ever feeling down, you don’t have to drown your sorrows alone. That night, you drank so much—you really scared us, you know? Camila and I thought you’d gotten yourself in trouble or something.”

Larry scratched his nose, looking sheepish. “It won’t happen again, I promise. Besides, I’ll be heading back to Portland soon, so we probably won’t see each other as much.”

Camila wasn’t surprised—she’d already heard the news. But Sarah’s jaw dropped.

“You’re moving back to Portland?” she blurted out.

Larry nodded. “Yeah, got some stuff to take care of back home.”

Sarah didn’t pry about the details, but she did ask, “What about your job here?”
